    Since normal driving cycles of the Volt use 35+ miles of EV operation, the car would likely achieve SULEV, on the road, without the device. A cold start spike of CO isn't a a hard thing to average out.

    It was as simple as that. Just pump more air into the exhaust. Has that been tested and verified to be working in the real-world?

    Chevrolet engineers modified the Volt’s engine and exhaust components—specifically the catalytic converter—by adding a secondary air-injection pump that streams ambient air into the exhaust stream to increase its ability to remove pollutants. The additional oxygen helps the catalytic converter remove even more pollutants.

    Well that explains a lot of why they get crappy gas mileage. They are not running a lean enough cycle to generate NOx to purge the hydrocarbons. . . . dummies!

    The Prius is the more aerodynamic car, not the Jetta.

    I would still say that diesels are the most efficient of *engines*. Not the most efficient of *cars*, but the engines are relatively efficient. Your chart is mainly comparing cars, not engines.

    A better coefficient of drag but also need the crossection area. It is easier to check the 'roll down' coefficients in the EPA/CARB data.

    Yes but when comparing diesel and petrol you are comparing apples and oranges, diesel has more energy per gallon (~12%) and emits more CO2 per gallon. One gallon of distilled fuel is not simply one gallon of crude, yes distilling efficiency may be better (or not) but again this is calculated based on energy content not volume.

    What does the high-sulfur bunker fuel commonly used in ships in open water have to do with his car, which uses far lower sulfur fuel?

    first, I'm not saying VW's cheat isn't a travesty - but just like raising EPA ratings on SUVs - it's equally - if not more important to remember to take care of the "big fish". If one cargo ship (& there are tens of thousands) is the same amount of pollution as 50 million cars - it doesn't take high school math to see which just as important if not more crucial to slowing pollution related deaths. Sorry I didn't set that point out more clearly. What with Europe looking like they're going to give a sort of free pollution pass to VW - it just reminds me of much of the maritime industry's free pass ... which is even larger. No better time than now for VW to cry foul. Volkswagen could easily claim that, "After all, cargo ships are way worse" .

    Yea but you forgot to include the dying nickel miners in Sudbury; fleets shipping nickel foam to Europe; fleets transporting nickel to China where slave labor assembles Prius batteries in coal powered factories; shipped in more fleets to Japan, and; fleets shipping the Prius to the USA. That should be 90% of all shipping in the world supporting Prius.
