Want to get better mileage? Lose weight

Well, I am 5'4" and weigh about 105 lbs. Happy now? :lol: I have a combined 48mpg (3500 miles).

 

While there may be a statistical lowering of mpg due to average increase in American obesity, the bigger effect is that as people get fatter they "need" bigger cars. My sister would like a hybrid so she could use the HOV lanes. But she is so fat she "needs" to drive an SUV. I'll bet that obesity is a big selling point for SUVs, even though they cannot put that in their commercials.

Kudos to those large folks who squeeze themselves into smaller cars anyway. I have a friend who is my sister's size, but drives a 2001 Prius, because she puts the environment above driving comfort. Note, also, that she did not wait for the larger '04.

they'd have to be referring to obesity in this case. it's becoming quite the regular thing nowadays, and daniel is right- bigger people buy bigger vehicles, namely suv's.

My city trips are short, and it is killing my mpg. Most of my mileage is highway and I always have 2-4 friends in the car with me on those trips. I get about 51mpg on the highway.

Yep -- I've noticed this connection also.

A friend of mine has lost 100 lbs in the past year, and is now seriously considering a SUV to Prius trade. There are other considerations to be sure, but without the weight loss, I am pretty sure she would stay with the SUV.
