    . . . Honda’s eco-friendly HEVs never have enjoyed the popularity of Toyota’s iconic Prius models.

    Even so, Honda has developed noteworthy HEV powertrains over the years, and its best to date was named to the 2017 Wards 10 Best Engines list last year.

    Propelled by Honda’s advanced second-generation Intelligent Multi-Mode Drive (i-MMD) 2-motor hybrid powertrain, the ’17 Accord Hybrid touts impressive fuel-economy of 49/47 mpg (4.8-5.0 L/100 km) city/highway. Not bad for a spacious, upscale 5-passenger sedan that’s closer to large than midsize.

    The all-aluminum, 16-valve DOHC 2.0L i-VTEC Atkinson Cycle I-4 generates 143 hp and 129 lb.-ft. (175 Nm) of torque (on regular fuel), while the motor contributes up to 181 hp and 232 lb.-ft. (315 Nm) for total combined system output of 212 hp, 16 hp more than the ’15 Accord Hybrid.
    . . .

    So checked and found this YouTube describing the first generation of this system:

    In effect the low speed gears are just a serial motor-generator. At highway speeds, the engine couples directly to the wheels. The metrics indicate not a bad solution:

    2017 Honda Accord Hybrid
    • 49 MPG - city
    • 48 MPG - combined
    • 47 MPG - highway
    Anytime the City MPG > Highway MPG, it is a worthy, efficient car.

    If they made a hatchback I'd be interested. Seems like they're coming along. Still, I'd wait till they've been on the road a few more years.

    Our '06 Civic Hybrid (still with our son and daughter-in-law)? Yeah, it's noteworthy, but quite a few of the notes are sour, lol: Honda at least sprung for a gratis replacement battery 2~3 years back, but it didn't take long for that one to start into the same ol' "recalibration" activities.

    To use a bank account analogy, that's basically a behavior that occurs when the car asks for electrons, and discovers (due to hidden service charges, employee pilfering, whatever), that there's less than expected.

    Yes.

    Ward site appears to be down right now? Probably link is fine, site is down: I tried just searching for it too:

    We will know soon, this is just a teaser.
    2018 Honda Accord Hybrid First Drive | Review | Car and Driver

    2018 hybrid Spec differences
    accord - 143 hp, 2L, 1.3 kwh lithium, 212 hp combined (>= 69 hp from battery/motor), 0-60 7.1, epa about 50 mpg combined
    camry le - 176 hp, 2.5L, 1 kwh lithium, 208 hp combined (>= 32 hp from battery/motor), 0-60 7.9, epa 52 mpg combined
    camry xle - 176 hp, 2.5L, 1.6 kwh nimh, 208 hp combined (>= 32 hp from battery/motor), 0-60 7.9, epa 47 mpg combined

    The accord has slightly more passenger and trunk space. Specs look close to a wash, depending on your options. The accord has a more powerful battery and less powerful engine. My guess is the 2018 camry engine will make the 10 best engines for 2018. Pick your options and get your prices, then take a test drive if they still are close.

    Not a hatch back, but the CR-V is slated to get this system.

    The 2018 Accord is also new. Now a full size sedan, with the battery not imposing on trunk space.

    That and pricing hasn't been announced yet. The current one is one trim only.
    Honda is only using Li-ion, so the only variables for fuel economy will be overall weight and wheel size.
