Yeah me too. How about the Hungarian uprising and exodus, was it '56? I recall my Dad and me walked up to the local quarry, where an encampment of refugees was camping, a big bonfire, singing.

The good take away from the op is that Toyota's President is putting all the subcontractors, vendors, part suppliers & even their own employees on advance notice (& doing so w/ a good amount of time) that they need to consider gearing up for different times - or get left behind. That's way better than finding someone from HR & 2 company security guards waiting at your Workstation.
Disney did that to a bunch of our lower management around Y2K. Felt sorry for some, as performance wasn't even taken into account.

I think, the problem OP depict is more at local level than entire country of Japan. Aichi where Toyota is based is like Detroit in the US. With "EV shift" there are going to be loss of jobs there, but looking at whole country, with working age population dwindling, they have far more serious worker shortage problem than job shortage right now and foreseeable future. IMO

While I love me my grains, hunter gatherer societies likely had a work week of under 20hrs.

Dealers are the true customers of Toyota, hence... know your audience. Early Adopters have an extremely difficult time accepting that, consequently misunderstanding how mainstream acceptance actually takes place. That's why talk of supplier issues rarely gets addressed, yet is fundamentally important to profitable business.

Travel agencies had the same problem... And what about Encyclopedia salesman? Or loggers before the feller-buncher? Or worst of all ditch diggers before backhoes and bulldozers. Sadly in capitalism, these changes tend to make the rich richer and the poor poorer, which is why social safety nets need to be robust and growing, especially when it comes to creating jobs that don't realize direct financial profits to investors, such as cleaning up air and water pollution, as well as restoring ecosystems. As in this is only a problem if we're stupid greedy and refuse to invest in the greater good of a more sophisticated, intelligent, just and responsible society.

Phasing out traditional vehicles has been the goal. Continued improvement of the hybrids, like the rollout of Corolla hybrid last week in Australia, is proof of that on-going effort. Next year, there will be a Corolla PHV.

Looking forward to seeing a Corrolla sedan hybrid? I want a regular trunk again.

Sure hope they keep the tradition alive and give you a can of fix-a-flat rather than a spare tire!

Power station don't have the demand late at night and with a little planning the existing infrastructure should be able to
handle the extra load as the BEV becomes a big deal.

Or just a regular Corolla, not a hybrid. I'm still concerned that I don't drive my Prius enough to keep the hybrid system healthy.

The dealers around here are full of 2019 Corollas already. Anybody seen any spy shots of the 2020 Corolla sedan? The new platform.

Found these: 2020. First time spotted in America. From Auto Guide.

Beyond the styling, the aforementioned TNGA underpinnings should bring improvements on all fronts. If the Auris is any indication (and it probably is), the Corolla will be offered with hybridized 1.8- and 2.0-liter gasoline engines. A conventional 1.2-liter turbocharged mill powers the base Auris, but it seems highly unlikely such a small engine will be offered in the U.S.-spec Corolla. By the way, the latter is set to be built at a new $1.6-billion factory in Huntsville, Alabama as part of a tie-up with Mazda.

Have you ever considered buying a Prolong system so you don't have to worry about it? I mean the only reason hybrids need to be driven often is because Toyota has choosen to ignore basic NiMH battery science, at least in terms of proper balancing & maintenance.

We've got under 50K miles on our 2010, AND it languished at dealership when new, for 15 months. No problems to date, seems normal, the charging ups and downs.

Probably the introduction of money. Followed closely by accumulation of money, then greed - rinse and repeat.
