I am thinking about putting waterless coolant in my new Plug-In Prius.
    Questions:
Does anyone have waterless coolant in their Prius now?
If so, how do you insure that you get all the water based coolant out?
How well does your Prius run on the waterless coolant?
Do you get increased fuel economy as claimed?

    Thanks,

Supposedly, the MPG benefit from such would be that the engine cooling fan need not come on as much, because operating temperature can be higher. This means that electrical load is lower. However, in a PiP, the engine is going to run cool anyway -- too cool in the winter already.

I can see the benefit from using this in a very old car with a non-pressurized system. The case for a PiP seems much less compelling. Good luck getting all the coolant out of the engine+heater core.

The 1902 Franklin had the VW beat by a few years. I doubt that the Franklin was the first.

And this wouldn't void the warranty?

Sorry to revive an old thread but I just wondered did you ever try the waterless coolant? I can see several advantages but a little worried about the electric water pump.

Waterless coolants? What do you mean by that?

Does such a xoola t have the same properties inherent in a Toyota coolant?

Well, as long as its the Evans guys, have got no problems with that.

They doing a great job with their engine oil flush stuff, and coolant flush products too. Great company.

I think the colourless, is just colourless, with it's additives intact.

First advantage is no corrosion inside cooling system.
Second advantage is that its very high boiling point means better cooling, because vapor cannot cool.
Third advantage is that very high boiling point means that the cooling system doesn’t get put under high pressure, so hoses and all components of the cooling system should last longer.

As I understand, Prius has a closed system which keeps coolant under pressure in order to prevent boiling. But even so, my understanding (and I could be wrong) is that the higher boiling point should keep the pressure lower than a coolant with water.

Do we know it is safe for the components of the Prius cooling system? I worked for a company who decided to use a different coolant in their TV transmitter. The coolant corroded the tubes and the silver plated racks that held them.

You're right. I think I'd prefer a colourless coolant, if offered, than ordinary water.

I think to answer your ??, would require some kinda analysis on the components after some time. I hope anyone that has used the coolants would afford to share such data, if eventually it was done.

If your car is under warranty I wouldn't try it, might void your warranty.

I have looked into it and should use it on some of my older cars.

Speaking of cooling systems I wonder how Gen 4 Prius will be to get the air out of the system?

My Gen 2 was rough for both the cooling and hybrid systems.

My point is that the testing should be done before somebody tries it and destroys their car.

I wouldn't try it, but it sounds very interesting. More so if it was used from the get go, put in by Toyota at the factory.

As it is, it'll be 10 years before our coolant is due, and by that time, I'd be reluctant to do anything but replace with same.

Maybe the manufacturer can tell you. This product has been in widespread use for at least fifteen years, and used in a lot of vehicles, so I seriously doubt there’s some magic pixie dust material inside a Prius cooling system which corrodes when exposed to non-corrosive coolant.

People use this on very expensive vehicles — Jay Leno uses it in his Duisenberg and in a Bugatti, and more... so it appears to be well time-tested. It just doesn’t seem likely that a Prius has something destructible inside.

That said... does it make sense? As far as I can tell, Prius cooling systems don’t corrode nor do they have failure points. And these aren’t vehicles which remain parked for long periods of time, like antique cars. Prius engines don’t get especially hot and they aren’t known to overheat. Given all that, I don’t know if this coolant has a benefit in a Prius, because Prius owners haven’t identified a problem which needs solving.

    I just meant "Buyer Beware".
Copper heat sinks and silver plating do not corrode either, especially if 3M DowTherm coolant is used. The local chemical company said their blend was equivalent -- It wasn't
