    When I was a kid, I lived in La Puente, CA.
    Decent neighborhood, I think. We all had about the same sort of house, bit of grass in the front yard, a yard in the back, with the drainage aquaduct behind that (those large concrete canyons you see in some movies...).

    Two doors down from our house was a black family. Up the block, a Hispanic family. There were Asian families, too, I remember their mom coming out and hollering at them to come in for dinner, when all us (mostly) girls were screaming, playing jump rope or jacks on the sidewalk.

    I was in 2nd grade that year, I think. All that mattered to us was who played fair, who was "IT" in tag, and how far from the house could we go play/visit before getting in trouble. For me, it was about 2 blocks. :)

    That was in the '60s, and I seriously doubt that my old neighborhood is as diverse, and as safe, as it was then.
