. . .I knew that they would be costly- but I was not expecting this.

I like to have a couple extra sets of keys in my safe as back-up.

Does anybody know where I can buy keys at a more reasonable price???

that seems pointless. use one and keep the second safe. if you lose one, replace it.

bisco- Yeah that is fine until I lose the 2nd key and if I sole the key I have on me and my other is at home in my safe I have a big hassle...
I keep multiple keys for all 5 of my vehicles.

I am bad with keys...I like to think it is because I have so much important stuff on my mind - but - it may just be because I am scatterbrained...

Split the difference: just get one extra?

Personally, I would wait till I was down to one though, before I got a second.

That may be the way to go...

It sounds like there is no place to go to get a better price on these.

Can you have more than 2 keys programmed at the same time? I thought I remembered there was a limit.

Thanx for the Heads-Up- You were correct- you can only have 3 key at a time programed to your Prius.

Remember when a car key WAS a car key, and you went into the shoe repair place and got a dupe for say $4~5...

    Progress.

And new sealed-beams were $20, and you never had issues with frosted headlight shells.

Oh: and bumpers WERE bumpers. :ROFLMAO:

See if you can find a dealer who sells online. There are several mentioned in a number of threads here. Also check local auto locksmiths. I would expect to pay about $150 per keyfob, plus maybe $100 to have them programmed. Wait a few months and the price will go down to maybe $125 each. Get your own copy of Techstream with a Mini VCI for about $30 and you can register them yourself. Last I looked the maximum number of keyfobs was 7 for Gen3, 5 for Gen2.

For the fourth-generation Prius, Toyota’s Repair Manual says, “A maximum of 7 electrical key transmitter sub-assemblies can be registered (this includes any electrical key transmitter sub-assemblies registered when the vehicle was purchased).” The Repair Manual for the Prius Prime says the same thing.

For MY 2010–2015: “A maximum of 7 keys can be registered.”
For MY 2004–2009: “A total of 5 keys can be registered.”
For MY 2001–2003: “It is possible to register up to 2 master key codes and a sub key code.”

I got myself a Tile ( thetileapp.com ) or you could try TrackR (thetrackr.com ) both available from Amazon and others. Two similar ideas but Tile is waterproof and sealed unit, TrackR isn't - but you can change the battery easily.

I had an uncle who was so bad at losing either his keys or wallet that at family gatherings we would confiscate both upon his arrival. You are the perfect customer for a tracker; MUCH cheaper and more convenient in most cases than multiple key duplicates. See below.

That reminds me: I attached a small luggage tag to our fobs, with my phone number and email. (I taped the same info to the locking lug nut socket, btw.)

I looked at your ZD Net list @fotomoto , but most seem to be reprinted of startups on Kickstarter ' to be announced at CES 2015. A later review favoured various versions of the Tile over the TrackR. Probably best to Google it or trust Amazon reviews.

If you tend to lose keys, one of your extras could go inside the car. Take out the battery, and maybe even remove the circuit board from the case. Then hide the circuit board somewhere inside the car. When you lose your active key 500 miles away at the beginning of a long weekend, it will come in useful. A tow service or locksmith can get you into the car, but a programmed keyfob is the only thing that will start it. Maybe keep a mechanical key as well. Don't leave a battery in a stored keyfob as it will go bad and/or leak crud all over the electronics. And practice using the no-battery circuit board while you're not under pressure. Just hold it up to the POWER button to unlock the ignition.
