Homeless men found slain in early hours

The two homeless men were gunned down within an hour of each other early Wednesday morning. Their bodies were found in alleys in United Central, a quiet residential neighborhood.

Police believe the same three teenagers killed both men. Witnesses at both sites told police they saw three black male teenagers with close cropped hair walking briskly away from the bodies. Police say they appeared to be between 13 and 18 years old

In October of 2004, three Milwaukee teens murdered a homeless man at his forest campsite. The teens hit 49-year-old Rex Baum, with rocks, a flashlight, and a pipe, before smearing feces on his face and covering his body with leaves and plastic. According to the criminal report, one of the boys â€œhit the victim one last time to see if he would make a sound like in Grand Theft Auto Game,â€ and then cut him several times with a knife to make sure he was dead.

In August, Curtis Gordon Adams, 33, beat and stabbed a disabled homeless man to death, and then licked the blood from his fingers on a Denver sidewalk.

In June, two New York City teens, kicked, punched, and finally bludgeoned 51-year-old William Pearson to death in a churchyard. Pearson crawled to the church steps before finally dying of a fractured skull. â€œHis head was a bloody mess,â€ one police officer noted.

Sadly, these gruesome accounts are few of many, which demonstrate the hate / violence faced by people experiencing homelessness each year. The following report documents 105 hate crimes and violent acts that occurred in 2004, collected from newspapers and reports across the country. The narratives bring to light the discrimination and senseless violence faced daily by so many of our countryâ€™s homeless citizens.

LA RONGE, Sask. - She may be the only one facing justice, but a 13-year-old girl is not solely to blame for the agony suffered by a homeless woman who was set alight in this northern town last spring, a provincial court judge remarked Friday.

"The actions of (the girl) were not done in isolation, either from her community or her peers," Judge Wilfred Tucker noted before sentencing the girl to two years probation - the maximum penalty - for aggravated assault.

The girl, who sat expressionless and alone as her sentence was delivered, was about six months past her 12th birthday when she and a group of teens came across the unconscious victim.
