I can't seem to find a solution to hold my smartphone up near the steering wheel. I had a perfect set up for my minivan so I could still access my phone.
Using a holder with a vent clip, it blocks the blocks control of the steering stalks. IMG_20170904_171102000.jpg
    Any suggestions?

We just put our phones in the cup holder holding the paper towel in your picture. My LG phone fits well there. Why do you need it up by the wheel?

Magnetic vent holder works perfectly. Just use the higher fins and line up with the MFD. Does not interfere with anything other than some air flow (but that also keeps the phone cool in the summer).

It catches my voice better when using Google Assistant, and also using the touchscreen to change the map view when using GPS.

That makes decent sense. Especially since you are depending on the phone to pick up voice commands and just hitting a map view button like any other GPS unit. I was just a little concerned that you might be using it for dialing calls, texting or keying in actual directions while you were driving. That distracted driving thing, you know....

You can do all those things with Google Assistant now. No need to touch :) even Google maps allows a lot of voice commands but I forget to use them
