    I bought these:
    2009 2010 2011 2012 Toyota Prius XW30 Black Color Shock Lift Hood Damper D2N5 | eBay

I bought a black set, but they are also available in silver and carbon.

Installation was very, very easy......it took more time to open the package than to install.

BTW: I installed them with the heavy part to the chassis.....that makes sense to me.....
The seller has pics with the damper bolted to the hood.....don't know why.
zhutton (on this forum and in this thread) has the same dampers and also installed them like the seller.
I can't find a reason why to do it like that.....only the other way around.

F8L's 2012 Prius received new Mobil 1 0w20 and a Toyota oil filter, as well as a transaxle drain/fill with Toyota ATF-WS.

How many miles on it now F8L? Was thinking of having the dealer do it during my last Toyota Care oil change.

I am at about 34,600 or so. I think Mike stored the info on his laptop last night so he'll probably correct me.

From what I saw last night and what the knowledgeable folks on here are saying I would probably have it done during your next visit. It's cheap insurance at approx. $100 IMO.

I will change it. There's no question about that. I'm just not sure what my service rep will charge me. If its too $$$ I'll just do it myself

They're plain black. (the hood dampers)

My DRL's when they are off: you can barely see them.....and that's whst I want.

I heard the reason to have them mounted, like they show in there picture. Was to help lubricate the o-ring, with the oil in the main cylinder. If you let the o-ring dry up, it will crack and leak. Don't know if that's true, but I figured I go with it.

It will probably be around $150 for them to do it.

ATF-WS is around $9/qt (discounted) and the two washers are about $2/ea.

Ridder, have you installed the gas struts the wrong way? I've got mine with the black at the top as per the pictures on their guides/advertising

Longo Toyota gave me too much trouble for wanting it changed at 35k miles and wanted like $250 if I insisted on it, so I said forget it and walked over to their parts department and purchased 4 quarts of ATF-WS. I had an independent shop do the change. It's a 0.38 hour job ($37.50 in labor charge).

Yes, I did it the other way.....
I've never seen struts mounted upside down like our chinese friend did.
Maybe there's a reason (like Burna J wrote) but I never had problems with struts leaking on previous cars.....or lids of containers or whatever.
I figured that you want the least amount of weight on the hood-side (or bonnet-side ;) ) like with your suspension....that's why you want lightweight wheels and wishbones etc.

Nice theory of course.....but for a hood damper it doesn't really matter....I think.
But there was a little thinking involved in my way of mounting.

Burna J: the dampers are horizontal 99.9999% of the time with lube everywhere: on the gland/the seal.

I bought and installed a Thule roofrack and a Thule Motion 800 Limited Edition Glossy White.

Too bad I don't like cold, snow and skiing.
