I've been searching all over for engine swap compatibility but haven't found much. How do I know if an engine will work in my car? Will any generation 3 prius engine work?

any gen 3, and even gen 4, with some shoe horning

best gen 3 is 15, and 14 is better than earlier

Any Gen 3 (unless you consider the c part of the 3rd generation; the c engine is not the same).

People installing Gen 4 engines have been doing some creative mods to make it work.

Thank you ! I just looked at a 2013 prius C engine 1.5L on ebay that said my vehicle was compatible after I put in the year, make, model and type of my vehicle. This is probably incorrect right?

c engine can swap to 2nd generation prius but not the 3rd.

The one you are looking for is officially named the 2ZR-FXE.

Yes, the Prius v uses the same engine as the regular Gen 3. Maybe one of the v owners can speak to any mods that may or may not be needed.

Yeah I was thinking that too, a little reluctant to stick my neck out though.

Corroboration: @Ragingfit has done a couple of 4th gen into third engine transplants. Same transplant engine type both times: one went into a regular third gen Prius, the other into a Prius v.

I believe the transaxles are internally different, 3rd gen Prius vs Prius v. But that's irrelevant.

Thank you ! If I went to a pick and pull yard how would I test the engine to make sure it works? On the phone they said I would have to ask the yard when I arrive but I'm thinking if the vehicles don't have any fluids and are missing a lot of other parts like batteries etc, how am I supposed to test it to see if it works?

You generally can’t test them; so you don’t buy them from a shady dude dealing it out of the back of his truck on a vacant lot. :)

Generally pick & pulls are good, word gets around fast if they’re selling garbage.

Yea this is an LKQ pick and pull place, it seems legit. They have 3 locations in San Diego and I think are nation wide. Should I just look it over and try to turn the crankshaft?

I guess if you had an air compressor and a leakdown test kit, that's a test that could be done without a lot of trouble, at least if the yard staff didn't feel like scowling at you the whole time.

But for the most part, it's about understanding it's to some extent a gamble of some n hundred dollars, and the odds are at least as decent as on various other things people gamble on.

LKQ shows the odometer reading of the car the engine was taken from. And I suspect they're on the level.

    That's worth something, when assessing.
