It isn't true, though. The original poster was misinformed by a dealer employee (which happens more often than we might like), and better info was filled in later in this thread.

and the Prius is no different in that respect, except for two things:
    1. it charges the normal battery at exactly the same rate whether you're idling, or driving down the road, or even sitting with the car READY and the engine stopped, and
    2. that charging rate is pretty slow, so you can't count on the battery getting a good charge from just a few minutes of use.

Chap, Thank you for clarifying this! I'm new to the Prius; correct information helps.

Even when I was driving 70 miles a day, five days a week my BatteryMINDer would still charge the 12v so I don't know how long a Prius would have to run to "fully charge" it.

From my point of view, I thank God that the Prius isn't assembled in the USA. There's only one car assembled in the USA that I would consider buying.

Both my USA-assembled Accord (Ohio) and Legacy (Indiana) were excellent. I can't imagine those to be the only ones.

So far my USA assembled Avalon has been perfect.

Chapman, thank you for you concise and clear explanation of the Prius battery. I was confused on what it actually was doing. I found out that in my car, if you try to run the radio without the car being in the ready mode, you will get a warning beep and the dash will tell you to start the car. That is how I found out I can't leave the radio on while I am waxing it, etc. And thank you for explaining the deep cycle difference in batteries. Looks like I will have to be mindful of the type of battery I replace.

The beginning of this thread reminds me of a game in whose line is it anyway where the players have to find a way to take offense at anything that is said.

I guess that's a good portion of the Internet anyways though nowadays...
