Why is hill hold needed or offered on an automatic? I thought that was only a feature for manual cars. Neat feature for those learning to drive a manual though.

Thanks again to all who helped. Just heard from insurance company. They offered me more than I expected for the car. Should get the check in a couple of days. If tomorrow's dealer visit works out well, I'll soon have a new ride.

I use the two foot method. Left foot on the brake and right foot on the accelerator. Hasn't failed me in years of driving automatics. Manual transmissions just need a little practice to master. I don't know why they even bother to put it in anything really. They should have spent the money on better seats in the lower models.

Toyota puts hill assist into the Prius because Japanese driving habits are different and so this is perceived to have value in Japan.

Do not ask about the logic. Just accept that Japanese logic is different.

    Thanks,

Handy when parked in a tight spot on a steep hill.
It works both uphill and downhill.
    Not needed but useful.

I suppose if I were a Prius engineer I would include hill hold as well. Since the electric motors and computer are already on the car, a switch is the only component that needs to be added for the hill hold feature...or does it use the brakes?

I guess it's using the brakes. The car won't roll when it's activated until 2 seconds or so has passed after releasing the brake pedal. At least it's holding the brakes, probably electrically for that 2 seconds. The pedal needs to be pushed to the floor in order to activate the Hill Hold so that the Traction Control light is on.

Got new vehicle yesterday. 2010, dark grey, navigation, CD (much better sound than in the 2007). etc. Now, off to the PriusChat shop for mats and such.

Nice choice. Gen 3 is such an advanced, efficient car.
