They charge every time the car is driven.

So does PRIME when driven HV with 0% EV SOC. Despite a smaller amount of charge, it is still the same level of charge as regular Prius, I would think.

I'm pretty sure the regular Prius still uses Ni-MH batteries.

Yep, I understand the economy of gas vs. elec in your area.

I wonder if 'Delayed Charging' would keep the pack warm without starting the battery charging?
I would like that feature on my BEV!

A few things about block heaters:
    > Your comfort (insta-heat when powered up in the cold).
    > Fuel economy (the engine spends less time running rich and dirty during warm up).
    > Better oil and engine life because of the above.

My suggestions really only apply to someone planning on keeping a car long term.
If you never have a car for more than 5-6 yrs,,, who cares how you treat it?

I need to check what the Drive Monitor 2 says, but I'm probably giving you a run for your money on that one. The summer weather and not having snow tires on should certainly help improve my efficiency. The 90 mile round trip outer suburb to inner suburb highway commute doesn't help--need some more city miles to bring the numbers up!

    Here's is my log:

As of 2019, only the two AWD-e models come with Ni-MH. The others are all Li-ion.

Thanks for your comment. I think certain regular Prius trim uses Li-ion battery. Eco trim in the US market for sure. NiMH vs Li-Ion battery - what's the deal? | PriusChat

As for the engine block heater, I seriously considered it. But after reading a thread here about someone in Alaska got his Prius on fire because the engine block heater cord got caught on the auto grill shutter and damaged the insulation, I reconsidered it. And at moment, my electric circuit for outside is on 15A breaker. Not big enough for both L1 and engine heater to work simultaneously. I would have to install higher Amp circuit which cost too much for my situation. May work with timers, but still too much work and money just to keep the engine happy which I expect to outlast the body without any of those intervention. I am not sure if I will keep this car for longer than 5-6 yrs or not, but my experience with my previous Toyotas and Hondas are that rust related issues disable the car way before I have any problem with engine or battery issue. I am expecting that PRIME is no exception.

Yeah, I just looked up the spec at Toyota site. Toyota Prius Interior, Exterior & Safety Features

IIRC, some of the older Gen4 trims including Eco and few others? used Li-ion battery.

Without looking it up, I'm not 100% sure, but I think the ECO was Li-ion but the regular two was NiMH.

And that’s why you guys have me lol.

One and Two were NiMH. Two Eco, Three, Three Touring, Four and Four Touring were Li-Ion.

    Thanks Tideland.

The first Li-Ion battery Toyota ever used was on 2012 PiP wasn't it? Were there any Li-Ion on regular Gen3 ever in any market?

    Well there you go!

So some non-plug in Prii have Li-ion packs with NO TMS except wafting cabin air gently through the pack, only when powered up in use.

Either they use a hardy-to-temp-extremes Li-ion chemistry. Or they just don't care.

Toyota is not the only car maker using Li-ion battery pack on regular hybrids without TMS that is car only with passive air cool or heat from the cabin using the pack, only when powered up in use. Our 2014 Nissan Pathfinder Hybrid has 144 V lithium-ion battery I think by Hitachi. So dose all of newer Honda hybrids are with Li-ion. My son has 2015 Honda CRZ hybrid and it is with 144 V lithium-ion battery the same one that was in later year model Civic Hybrid. I don't believe any of those regular hybrids with Li-ion battery has active TMS when not is use like parked under sun when temp is >100F or out in cold in subzero temp. I think Toyota was very late in starting to use Li-ion on their regular hybrid cars and only (or a few?) company still continuing to use Ni-MH on some models (eg. Prius AWD-e trims and RAV4 hybrid).

Technically? The Prius Alpha/Prius+ sold elsewhere with 7 seats. The 7-seater had a Li-Ion battery tucked under the centre console. I think it preceded the PiP by almost a year.

A hybrid doesn’t work its battery hard enough to require liquid cooled TMS. Prii have fans so they can be actively cooled with cabin air.

Also, if it gets too hot, the computers can always rely on the engine more and let the battery cool.

    What about too cold?
    TMS is not just cooling.

Then it limits output (and at those temps, the engine would be running anyway for heater use). The battery is charged a little (if you were a Prius owner, you would know) so that helps with temperature moderation).

If you’re talking about the Gen 4 specifically, the Li-Ion models m were not sold in cold climates until 2017 when they added a battery heater to the Li-Ion models.

Over 2 months of paying a close attention to how I drive and trying to hyper-extend EV range on my PRIME, I could only notch up 0.1miles/kWh from previous 4.5miles/kWh. ~5,000 miles is not enough to make a dent on over 30K miles odometer reading.:cry::cry:

I'm not sure I see it the same way.;)

You've been rocking it in June and your monthly average for July is jaw-dropping good.
I agree that with 31K on the odometer, it will take longer to affect the overall average when compared to anyone with a lower odometer reading. Anyway you look at it, you and your Prime handily beat its official EPA rating by a measurable amount.

    Cheers
