What kind of 12v battery do I need for a 2010 Prius? And does Walmart carry them?

I was at a Walmart just now asking for a replacement they’re like, “oh no we don’t have anything Prius that runs on a hybrid engine. You need to go to a special dealership for a hybrid battery.” I said, “a Prius has both a hybrid battery and a 12v I need a 12v not the hybrid battery.” They didn’t really seem to know what they were talking about still claimed they don’t carry anything Prius. Can you guys give some input?

you can get one most anywhere, i can't speak for wall marts

they usually have a catalog. you look up your make model and year, and it gives the part number.

it's either on the shelf, or you ask at the counter. make sure they charge it up

I don't believe Walmart carry battery with the post size fitted for Prius..
Your options are auto part stores like AutoZone, Advance Auto Oart, or your local Toyota dealership

They're all expensive. Not sure what Toyota wants. THAT is the battery I'll buy when I need one.
But they last 6,7, 8 years.... About $32 a year....

Did you charge your battery and try it?

He bought a charger to charge it but he doesn’t have an outlet to plug into so he will need a solar charger in his situation. Even if it’s charged, he has to resolve the hv battery dead replace me issue, on another thread of the many.

Yes, walmart having the lead acid battery and it compatible to prius. Look in Group 51 battery in walmart for less $100, but you need to buy terminal connector positive and negative side.

I know that this is an old thread, but Walmart now offers a 12v battery (group size S46B24R) for the Gen 3 Prius. It is EverStart Platinum AGM 45 amp hours with a 4 year warranty and is listed for $160 in my area. Not all store have the battery in stock, but some do that are close to me. Check the Walmart website for more details.

    Brian1954,
I just noticed your post as I was searching less expensive S46B24R (emphasis on the "R") and I too noticed Wal-Mart now sells this as stated S46B24R...the picture the website shows has negative post on the left "L". Do you know if this is just a wbsite graphics error or product mislabeling error? I ask because not every Wal-Mart has them and the nearest to me is 20 some miles away and I don't want to waste a trip. Thanks

If they've got them in stock, should be able to phone them up, have someone check. It should have skinny posts too.

Here's some info on dimensions, numbers I took directly:

OEM battery info (measurements taken directly):
    Battery id: S46B24R GS YUASA
    length: 9 3/8" (238 mm)
    width: 4 7/8" (124 mm)
height: 8" (203 mm) (excluding posts)
    post dia's:
    Pos: 13 mm (approx)
    Neg: 10 mm (approx
    Weight: 310

Note, the 8" vertical dim (case only, not the posts) is fairly critical, due to the goofy hold-down bracket design Toyota uses. If it's just a hair taller or shorter, you'll need shims or washers to have that bracket sitting properly.

The picture on Walmart 's website is correct with the negative post on the left. You rotate the battery 180 degrees when you install the battery in the car. Hurry and purchase the battery that is in stock. The battery has not been available since the middle of December 2023 in my location in PA. I have been checking because the voltage on my 12v battery has been decreasing the last few months, and I may need to replace the one in my car in the near future.

IIRC the battery posts are towards the "back" of the battery, and the vent port is on the left. If the battery is oriented thus, and has neg post on the left, might be impossible to install: you rotate it 180 degrees and the posts are too far forward (especially for the positive cable clamp, and the vent port would be unusable.

Might just be a typo in the Walmart pic though.

I noted the same thing...if I rotate the battery, then the vent port is on the right side and the tube is too short. That tube is just a rubbertubing for venting battery gases right...could it be spliced and electrical taped to give it the needed length?

Also current OEM Toyota battery has positive in the front corner so that aspect of rotating it isn't bad.

The vent hole on the battery is on the left side near the positive terminal not on the right side. Here is a picture of my 3-1/2 year old battery that I purchased from Batteries Plus. The Walmart battery was not available back then. I will purchase the Walmart battery when I need a replacement for my present battery. 20240210_134732.jpg
