    I know what the fuel guage PIPs are, I just don't know what the dang acronym stands for! It's not in the acronym sticky, nor could I find it anywhere else.

    I guesss it could mean "Picture In Picture" but that doesn't really make sense to me (not how I think of it anyway).

    Other guesses:

    Petrol Indicator something or other

    Maybe its not an acronym but is its own word, such as in economics where PIP is the smallest indicator of a commodity (that actually makes some sense).

    As much as PIPs are bandied about on this forum, it seem I'm the only that doesn't know what it stands for!

    I never thought it was an acronym. I always considered it in this context (from WikiPedia):

    As proco implies, when you encounter an unfamiliar word, first consult a dictionary.

    I have to admit myself, I knew what the "PIP" was, but didn't know what it actually stood for. :rolleyes:

    Or in the world of old DEC computers: Peripheral Interface Program. Things were much easier in those days. For example, if you wanted to print out the contents of a file on the teletype, you would use this convenient PIP command:

    pip ti:=filename.ext/li

    That would run the PIP program and tell it to list the contents of filename.ext and pipe it to the standard teletype (ti:). That was so much easier than clicking on print.

    According to Wikipedia, PIP is also a "disease of birds, characterized by a thick mucous discharge that forms a crust in the mouth and throat."

    I think that accurately describes the symptoms of Prius owners who run out of gas when they are on their last PIP.

    Just to clarify, it's "pip" (not all capitals) and it's not an acronym.

    Here in lower New York State the Palisades Interstate Parkway, "PIP" as it is also know runs from the George Washington Bridge to the Bear Mountain Bridge. Completed in 1958, the Parkway provides a scenic 42-mile ride from the George Washington Bridge to Bear Mountain. It's really great in the fall when the leaves are turning colors.

    "Pip" was a term used to describe the "blip" marker on a radar screen during WWII. I don't know if it was used before that time.

    Those green light bars marking how much gas you have in the tank. The Prius has up to 10 Pips. Gladys Knight had 3.
