...They believe it is much better for America that the world be dependent on oil for energy — a commodity largely controlled by countries that hate us and can only go up in price as demand increases — rather than on clean power technologies that are controlled by us and only go down in price as demand increases...

    More on the same...

Sources Say World’s Remaining Oil Supply Less Than Reported
    - November 13, 2009
    Situation
= International Energy Agency has purposely painted overly rosy picture of remaining oil supply to avoid public panic
= Inaccurate oil supply has been result of heavy pressure from United States
= Comes from 2 unnamed sources - 1 current and 1 former IEA employee
= Many inside IEA believe maintaining oil supplies at 90M to 95M barrels a day would be impossible
= But there are fears panic could spread on financial markets if figures brought down
= Sources say Americans worry it would threaten their power over access to oil resources

    Significant Points

= IEA plays key role in determining world's energy outlook; has large influence on oil price and demand
= Many of world's largest governments have used IEA reports as basis for driving energy, environmental policy
= Heart of the issue is looming question of peak oil
= Whether or not we've already entered production decline
= Or if world can still increase oil production to meet demand into near future
= IEA has consistently said world can increase production through at least 2030
= Whistleblower: IEA has held back analysis, data showing world may have already entered decline phase of peak oil
