Hey, is anyone planning to move to 17-inch wheels and 215/45 on their PiP?

I'd love to see loss in EV miles do to this swap. The swap on a non-PIP results in a 4+mpg loss so one could hypothesize a loss of at least a few EV miles on a PIP as well as a loss in mpg as well. This is especially apparent in stop and go situations because it takes a lot more HP to get the wheels rolling. The difference can be felt immediately after installing the larger/heavier wheels. :)

    Edit

I forgot to mention the correct plus size for the GenIII equipped with OE 25s would be a 205/50/17, not a 215/45/17. :)

Do NOT do this, I had a 2010 model V Prius that came with those 17" wheels and low profile tires. Several flats, slow leaks (that could never be found and fixed, the car was traded in with them) and damaged rims if you hit a pothole, $275 for a replacement tire. Never again will I buy a car with low profile tires, or put them on a car I own.

BTW, my 2012 advanced PiP came with Goodyear fuel max tires. I was planning on ordering a spare tire, and possibly a spare wheel as well.

What about just going up in width on the stock rims? I did that with my Gen II Prius and it made a huge difference in cornering performance. Now I think that upgrade was to 195s... Is 205 the max supported with on the Gen III?

But how is it that the Prius 5 is rated for the same gas mileage as the Prius 2, 3, and 4? (At least it had the larger wheels).

The Five was not used for EPA testing. Toyota tested the 15" wheel equipped car and submitted those numbers to the EPA.

It is common knowledge that upsizing wheels on the Prius will result in lower fuel economy. Some claim only a 1.8mpg difference for the OE 17" wheels but I disagree and find 3-4mpg to be more accurate. This is especially true when going to an aftermarket wheel and tire and with lower offsets.

My own personal experience with the GenII resulted in a loss of between 4-9mpg depending on the tires and driving methods, especially hypermiling which greatly favors 15" wheels.

The 185/65/15 on the GenII was woefully too narrow and corning was pretty bad. The 195/65/15 on the GenIII is a much needed upgrade and cornering is pretty decent with the right tires. Many have upgraded to something like a 205/60/15 for better handling but expect the speedo error to increase since this is a shorter than stock tire. Much like the 215/45/17 is smaller than the stock 15" tire so speedo error may shift from 2mph too fast to 3-4mph too fast. I'm still waiting for data to determine if this is true. In theory going from 829 revs/mile to 844 revs/mile should produce this error.
