What to check when buying a used PiP?

Ask for the DMV paperwork of those stickers. You need to apply for Transfer of those stickers, if not, you shouldnt drive in the HOV lane.
Also if the stickers are originally issued before 2017, those will be transferred to you only till the end of this year. If those stickers are issued (first time issue) in 2017 or 2018, you will get a chance to get them renewed(in 2018) for 4 more years. Its tricky, please do some research on them to get the best use of them.

 

That is the way it worked for me when buying my car new. A few weeks later, after my check cleared, I received a notice from the dealer that a loan for me had been denied.

 

Did you write a personal check or cashiers check?

I paid for my used 2012 PiP in cash with a cashier’s check. Dealer was insistent on trying to run my credit, but it’s completely unnecessary with a cashier’s check. In the end they sold me the car without a hard hit.

However with personal check, then yes they need the backup loan.

Unlike previous responders, I've never heard of this. I paid for my last five vehicles with personal checks and no one even mentioned a backup loan.

 

I dont have this knowledge when I was buying my 2013 Odyssey and got a hard hit even though I got enough reserves in the account of my personal check. Lesson learned (no loan is involved in that purchase but a personal check )

 

That's a normal process dealers may do; you'd be surprised how many fraudulent CASHIERS or personal checks are out there! I bought my new Prime from a dealer, who kept the car til my credit union cashier's check cleared!! They then delivered the car to my house, with 2 guys who answered all my questions. This money/title exchange is why it's USUALLY safer to buy from a reputable dealer, who has more at stake, than a private individual. Remember, dealerships are made up of individuals, some good, some not so good. My dealer contact was recommended by a dealer friend who knew them well. Word of mouth is King!

When I say "Dealer", I mean "New Car Dealer"; new car dealers (who deal with the brand of car I might be buying used), also sell used cars. If I were buying a used Toyota, I would prefer to buy it from a Toyota dealer. Anything else can become more of a crapshoot. USED CAR dealers are all over the place; good luck with that one!

 

Check with the dealer to be sure, but they should either send you the title or registration or have the DMV do so.
