What type of battery is our 12 V accessory?

Does anyone know what type of battery our 12 V accessory battery is in the PIP. I have called 4 different Toyota dealers, Toyota Customer Care, Taken it to Interstate battery center and NO one knows for sure. Is it a SLI/SLA or an AGM. The reason I ask is because I purchased the Solar BA5 battery tester and it requires you to pick what type of battery it is.

You want to use the SEAL setting I believe, since the battery type is AGM. Not 100% sure, but our 2010 Prius battery is:

    12 volt battery:
    Toyota Part No: 28800-21171
    Battery info:
    GS Nippon Denchi
    YUASA S46B24R-GS
    Cold Cranking Amps: 310

BTW, I'm just waiting on delivery of the same tester, supposed to arrive this aft. :)

If it is a AGM, why is it vented? I thought AGM didn't need to be vented?

Any battery gives off hydrogen. The criteria for venting is if they're in the cabin zone.

BTW, the 2016 may have the 12 volt battery in the engine bay. This would mean they could use regular, cheaper batteries. That's about the only nice thing I can say about the 2016, but anyway...

Thanks. With Solar BA5 Battery tester on AGM mode of 325CCA I measure 381 CCA - SO I guess I am good for a while with my 3 year old battery.

This may sound stupid, but imo if you are getting 381CCA on the test one of two things is happening. Either the tester is not set correctly, or the battery has a higher than 325 CCA rating.

FWIW, It might not be a bad idea to visually inspect the battery you are testing and "confirm" the CCA of the battery.

What increment does it allow you to set for CCA, only in steps of 25?

Did you find CCA spec printed on your battery? Is it the same battery, btw? It could be different: higher CCA spec.

Don't think CCA's shown on mine, had to look up on the 'net.

Hang on, looking at that link I posted for my battery, it says "cold cranking performance (AMPS) EN1 = 310"

If I look in the manual for the tester, EN1 is different than CCA. So you need to enter after selecting EN, not CCA:

From website spec'ing my battery, presumably same for you:

    And from tester manual:

There are tables you can download, if you want to convert the EN spec to CCA, I think.

Yes. My battery appears to be slightly different. I called one of the Tech guys at Solar Testers and he reported that it is totally acceptable to be above the CCA amps. He reported that batteries are prorated and after a few years it should still be holding the CA or CCA that it is rated at.

The Solar BA5 lets you set increments by 5 at time.

    My tester arrived.

Since there was no indication as to CCA on my battery case, I went with 310 found on the net, does after all appear to be CCA, checking a few more web sites. I set type to be FLAt (traditionally shaped AGM battery). Results were:

    Actual CCA: 352
Green and Yellow LED: battery good but in need of charging

I'll hook up my CTEK 3300, see how that goes.

Yeah, I did post that in #3. That's mine at least; the fellow with PIP has a different battery I think.

Do you happen to know definitvely the CCA's, for the YUASA S46B24R-GS, 310 is what I'm seeing on the 'net. I see nothing on the case, though maybe it's hiding under the lifting belt, in my pic. I'd rather not get it right out again to check.

Hmmm. Interesting info being shared on this post. FWIW, the pic I have of the replacement battery (True Start) that was being sold by several of the Toyota dealers last year showed 325 CCA. I have not been to the dealer recently to confirm or verify if this battery is still available today.

I found another site that advertises the S46B24R battery, and indicates it's 310 in EN units. Also found a pdf table for conversion of EN to CCA, with 310 in EN equaling 341 in CCA. Clear as mud, but maybe I'm getting somewhere.

    Yup, good grief...

In the tester manual, there's a table showing battery capacity ranges it can handle. It seems like an EN value divided by .95 will convert to the CCA value. Maybe.

If I take the 310 value, divided by .95, it comes out to (roughly) 325. Which is what edsvrf800 has on the label on his battery. Maybe that resolves it??

Anyway, the tester told me I'm good but it could use charging, so I'll let that run to completion, then sit overnight, then test again, trying CCA=325, see what happens.

While charging I deciding, forget about conversion: if Yuasa specs EN1 to be 310, and the tester allows EN entry, then use that, and enter 310 as value.

Charging complete. I did that, and it returned value 354, plus green LED only, indicating the battery is good.

I ran the test twice, with same result. I'll recheck in a few days. In case the charging is a factor, but think it's good.

    Mendel,

Not trying to steal this thread but did want to ask this question. When you did the recharge, what amperage did you have the charger set on? I think you have a CTEK there, so I figure you used that with the AGM setting. Also, how long did the charger charge until the battery was "full" again?

Will be interesting to know when the BA5 shows the green/yellow LED again meaning you need to charge the 12 volt.

    Thanks for the feedback... (y)
