What's the best MPG in a 2016 Prius?

    Full disclosure: I recently lost a 2000 5-speed Honda Insight and replaced it with a 2007 Prius.

    Enjoy my Prius - intend to detail it, but I miss the highway fuel economy my Insight got.

    Wikipedia states the 2016 Prius Eco has beaten the Gen I Insight, but I want to hear directly from the drivers.

    Please post your results. These are mine on the Insight in warm weather without the AC with steady highway driving:

    • @ 100+ mph: 35 mpg (I'm just saying....NOT encouraging anyone to get in trouble!)
    • @ 70 mph: 60 mpg (this is too fast for the diesel-like lean-burn mode)
    • @ 55 mph: 85 mpg
    • @ 45 mph: 109.2 mpg (did this once from Dallas to Houston round trip)
    These results were not done with drafting. A Car and Driver writer got a 2000 Insight to 125 mpg @ 58 mph with extreme drafting, but definitely not real world results.

    got my 2016 Prius Eco last 01/30/16, drove 770 miles combined city/highway as high as 75mph before my first fill up this week, I didn't wait for fuel warning though so I don't know much left in the tank, I guess 770 / 11.3 gal = 68mpg maybe not the best.

    Did you really put 11.3 gallons of gas in your car? Or is that the car's capacity? You need to make note of actual gallons pumped.

    When I got the car from the dealer it was full tank, I assume it's 11.3 gallons a according to cars manual, am I wrong about this, i did put 10.3 gallons at Costco first fill up.

    It seems that there is at least a gallon of gas in the tank after the low fuel light comes on. Based on only being able to pump 10.6 gallons after driving with the light on for 50 miles. But, there is a difference between total fuel and usable fuel.

    doesn't the manual detail the fuel tank capacity and 'reserve'?

    The OP was really talking about "hypermiling". I haven't seen yet a post from one of those guys, but in "normal driving" 70 MPG appears to be possible. If that's the case I would expect well above 100 MPG from a hypermiler.

    Anecdotally, @Chuck. , I drove the Gen4 on the Tri-State Tollway around Chicago for a total of 120 miles (60 down and 60 back). This was the first full day I had with the car. I'd never had a car with Power Mode before nor had I driven a car with that much "giddy up". (I just don't drive a lot of sporty cars). So needless to say, hypermiling was not on my mind that day. I was driving between 60 - 80 mph and basically enjoying the car way too much to worry about mileage.

    I don't have the numbers in front of me but I know it was very high 50s. Not quite 60.

    I have taken the same trip in my Gen2, really worked the hypermiling, and have achieved the same mileage. This makes me assume that if joyriding the Gen4 returns almost 60, interstate hypermiling could push almost 70.

    Long time PriusChat member that until lately almost invisible in these parts of PC.

    If I had $25K in the bank, I'd probably gotten the 2016 instead of the 2007....an older Prius is not bad for a "banger."

    The 2000 Insight spoiled me - like 150 years ago, it's like losing "your favorite horse"

    I am curious to what the 2016 Prius Eco can do on the highway, and sounds like it can come pretty close to my old Insight. Considering it seats 5 - not 2, I think it's safe to say it's more efficient, even with a 1.8 ICE - not 995cc ICE.

    I'm not up to speed, but the main differences I see between the 2007 and 2016 Prius is they swapped the steel for lighter materials and replaced belts in the ICE with motors that engage as needed.

    If you read this and a couple of my threads, including going from my Insight to my Prius, you would know I had no ill intentions at all. I have met krousdb and he can squeeze more out of a gallon of gas than I can on any vehicle.

    Having driven both vehicles, I know what both can do. If you had a car for 15 years and it was special, you would feel the loss. I do enjoy my 2007 Prius and seriously consider mods including a plugin.

    I NEVER INTENDED THIS TO BE ONE OF THOSE MY CAR VS YOUR CAR THREADS .... DIME A DOZEN OF THEM.

    It's a matter of time before a car can outperform my 2000 Insight on the highway...IMHO too long because not near enough drivers demanded it...automakers will build whatever the public wants. I'm honestly curious if the 2016 Prius is close on highway mileage...in 5 years I can begin considering a new car.

    Not the first time I've conceded the Honda hybrid system sucks, but a number of other cars also have 3 cylinder 1 liter engines...others with small very efficient engines....Insight also pioneered lightweight materials. The Insight still got a number of things right, even being a 2 seater. Lots of good things I can say about the Prius AND the Insight.

    Wayne Gerdes posted some steady state testing on the Two Eco on CleanMPG. IIRC, 78 MPG at 50MPH and 73 MPG at 55 MPG. That was with temps in the 50'sF.

    Wayne is going to be doing a much more in depth test this spring and summer and rack up a lot of miles. I had emailed him about the discrepancies pointed out here about calculated MPG versus computer reported MPG.
