Eventually I'll flesh out that part of the description with some pictures and such. I've actually already done the thing, just don't have the jack installed yet. And I'm still trying to figure out why I'm doing it since I don't have a portable DVD player. But seemed like fun!

I would give you my firstborn for those pictures and a brief write-up!

Darell, you do what you do because you are who you are. You are an intelligent man with a great knack for putting things together, superb writing skills and pretty darn good with a digital camera and a macro lens!

I don't think we can even begin to grasp just how big an impact you make on the world of hybrid owners out there.

Did I ever tell you you're my hero. You're everything I wish I could be...lol. You catch my drift. :)

This is what I have been waiting for. When I traded in the miivan to get better FE my 3 kids were a bit disappointed that I did not have a good video solution for the Prius. Now I do! They can all see the MFD from the back and the dvd audio output will go into the aux input jack. I plan to put a cheap little dvd player in the glove box where it will sit wired and ready when needed.

While we are kind of on the subject... which wires are the aux in for the stereo? That way I can connect my dvd audio to it while Im hooking upi the video to the MFD. I won't have to run the cable over to the aux jack in the console.

It may not be that easy. What package number do you have? On my Package #3, the AUX jack also includes another wire, which I believe gets switched to ground whenever a plug is inserted. Without grounding that wire, the radio doesn't know you have anything connected. But, thinking outloud here, you may still need to plug something into the console jack to activate it...Hmm..
On another note, if you're thinking of using the MFD while driving, I'd recommend against it. Or, at a minimum, build some kind of shield so that you can't see it from the driver's seat. It *may* help if you'd get pulled over.

This is cool. I need to look at mine (2006 Pkg 1) - I don't have a backup camera, but assuming the functionality is still built into the MFD, it might be even easier since I don't have to switch video sources. It would need the back-up camera override though in order to get into the video display mode to start with.

But my Prius has <1000 miles on it, so my wife wouldn't want to see me in the garage with a soldering iron!

When I told my seven-year-old I was getting a new car his only question was if it had a built-in DVD player.
He can "rough it" with the portable player that hangs on the back seat for awhile yet.

What ever happened to playing the License Plate Game while on car trips?? Singing the old songs together as a family... The 'He's making faces at me!!!!'... and "If I have to hear poking your brother one more time, I'm going to stop this car and you'll all be sorry!!!".. and the old favorite, "Are we there yet??"

OH>.. that's why people put DVD players in their cars!!
    ;)

You might want to check the legal requirements in your state. I found this link, though since it is from 2004, the numbers may have changed:
You might also find that the outboard rear passengers will be leaning toward the center to see the screen. Not real safe should there be an accident since the shoulder belts will be useless. I think it might be better to get a portable player and figure out a way to mount it at the back of the center console.

Is this true even of the non-navigation MFD? I thought I read something (at least in previous years) about them being different.

It is obvious if you look that the prius was designed to fit through a stargate. :p

Why has it gone silent in here? Why is everyone looking at me?

I am going to try to patch in two video sources this weekend if I find the time. I want to add a forward camera, and a DVD line. I will take pictures of the process and post them here if I am able too. However, I wanted Keydiver to assist me with a little guidance before I start cutting into wires on the back of the MFD. I have not heard back from him yet.

I think it has fallen silent here because a certain someone is not allowed to hack on there Prius anymore and without their fine commentary many of us just feel a little timid about this mod.

do you have to have the car in reverse to play videos?
