I don't really care about cosmetics... In fact, when I bought my Prius, I told them not to paint the hood and take $600 off the price...

Anyway, noticing some of the silver wheel paint is flaking off. Is this a problem from a functionality standpoint? Again, I really don't care about the cosmetics... just want to make sure I'm not going to find my car sitting on its brake rotors some day :).

Painted wheels? Won't be a problem.

When is time to buy tires, you should look for a nice set of take off wheels to replace your set

Meh. Again, if it's not gonna cause a long term problem, I'll live with the paint flaking off, new tires or not. Thank you for the good advice as usual.

A new set of take off wheels will be similar in price as new set of tires. That's why I said to do that when the time comes. Won't cost much more and you'll get a new set

Ohhh I see what you mean now. Get some wheels and tires from a wrecker... Misinterpreted you. Okay, that's a fair idea. Many miles before new tires are needed (just got her a week ago as you may know), but i'll keep that in mind.

You really should question why paint is coming off the wheels, haven't seen that happen before unless it's a hubcap

Maybe it's just the clearcoat flaking off?

Here in California, the Craigslist ads always have new take off wheels listed, sometimes for $500 you get a brand new set rims and tires

    Makes sense.

I think the answer to your rhetorical question is "It's a ten year old car... these things happen."

Won't hurt structurally. I'd sit on my porch and stare at it till I couldn't take it anymore, then have them powdercoated or replaced.

    LOL WNY...

Yeah I've got a little perfectionist in me myself. But you know what? I've learned my lesson when it comes to cars.

That's why I bought gently used. Someone already took it through the "OCD phase" if you will. Now that it's mine, I expect it to have a few dings, a few chips, a few scratches. And it'll only get worse. Oh well, just a car. A great car no doubt, but just a car. :)

You know it just occurred to me you can do two inexpensive things-

1- sand wheels and coat with wheel paint
(auto parts store, 8.00 a can. One can each wheel)

2 - clean really well and buy plasti-dip. - not permanent, but lasts a while and peels off when you don't want it anymore.

Google both options, tons of you tube videos. No need to remove tires from wheels to do this, as long as a similar color is used.

    Thanks for the tip, but...

    Leaving well enough alone = $0.00 a can. :)

I hear these are available for the prius....

LOL... SWEET! If that happens, let me know. That evening, I'll just happen to leave a few automotive-related devices out in the driveway... orbital buffer, shop vac, carpet shampooer, detail brush... all the good stuff.

Might as well make it worth it if you're gonna stalk me in the night :D
