I propose that if you do not show your city and state of residence your post will NOT be posted!

I do not live in a city. My township is small enough that it is printed on few local maps. Our town limit signs are 4X4 posts, with the town name painted vertically on the post, one at either end of town, 15 miles apart. We have one road that goes through our town. I do not think there is any WWW presence for our township. So even if I included the name of my town, in my signature. I am not sure it would give you any real idea of where I lived.

Lets just say that I live in the forests of Maine, alongside a river. :)

My paranoia doesn't allow me to divulge this information.

Besides, I don't want you bastards knowing where I live. You know...Black "Prius Chat" Helicopters flying overhead.

OK...occasionally knowing someone's location ties in directly into a diagnosis of a problem. But that can be worked out in any individual thread.

I don't think it should be a requirement that we automatically give this information.

It's just a pet peeve of mine. But I'm old enough to remember when I DIDN'T have to give my telephone number and zip code out to get a hair cut. Now they ask for it, every time I visit.

I'm all for pulling back some information in this information age.

If you are asking any questions here, you are getting poor advice if we do not know where you live.

Only if the answers require some idea of environmental conditions. Which can be asked and divulged separately.

For that matter, unless you are looking it up on the internet knowing where someone reports to be living really isn't necessarily revealing of what driving conditions or environmental conditions they might be in- for any given situation.

Outside of the general...Alaska Cold...Florida Hot...

You might need to know what the conditions...but it doesn't necessarily have to be automatically revealed in a profile.

In the NHW11 forum, we like to recommend the nearest independent shops or even clueful members who make house calls. As for the bloveaters, we know how to spell <STATE>.

Let's face it. Many of the first questions posted here by a newb will involve fuel economy. They may not be aware of how much the environmental conditions effect it. A town listing isn't needed, but a state or even geographic region(ex. south west US) is enough to start helping them without wasting a post asking where they live.

It doesn't need to be mandatory, but stating how giving even a general location during the profile set up can help with MPG trouble shooting wouldn't hurt. If they choose not too then, they might remember to give the info with any question they have.

    So ask.

Since weather in almost any region can vary maybe even on a day to day basis, I think asking what are the conditions really a better approach. Looking at a profile and assuming the conditions match your "idea" of what the weather might be like could be wrong. So regardless of a location given in a profile, I think asking what the environmental conditions are...NOT a waste of a post.

But just in general, to the OP's original post.

I would rather NOT be forced to reveal location for my posts to show.

In years of posting here, I've revealed my home state, where I travel. I'm really NOT as paranoid as I sound.
But in short, I vote for locational anonymity on a voluntary basis.

I am not saying make it mandatory, just that you are shooting yourself in the foot.

CARB states, Hawaii options, Grey market nations, different Prius model years in different nations (sometimes 2010 is a gen 2), all are greatly simplified if we know upfront where you are.

It is exactly like leaving the vehicle year and model blank and asking about your Prius. You will waste a great deal of good faith with stupid questions you could have easily answered up front.

It may be a mistake you wish to make, but it is always a mistake. (unless you never ask any questions)

I propose that OP should consider the remote possibility that people on the internet sometimes make stuff up.
