One of my remote key fob got stolen and the thief know where i live. So he could drive away my car. Called dealer and charged $350 for the key fob & $450 to reinitialize the whole system. Does any know where I can get the key fob for cheaper price? Anyway to reinitialize the system by myself?

    Thanks in advance!

Shop around (call different dealers with your query) - EBay fobs (used) run $50ish - the car itself can take up to 4 fobs. Now's your chance to add a backup or two...

Programming used fobs is not too easy - get your dealer quote based on 2 used fobs...

I know that with the LS430 smartaccess fobs, many of the ebay ones simply don't work. Clublexus members order ours from Sewell Lexus in Dallas for a discount and have our local dealer program them. That's also a good time to ask the dealer to change any options (like the backup beeper) that can only be changed be the dealer - often done for free when they are doing the key programming.

I just purchased what I hope is a New smart key from here....

oops....won't let me post the ebay site (try typing in "new 2010 prius smart key")

The ad says its condition is "new" so I hope to avoid the issues that seem to arise with re-programming a used key.

My neighbourhood dealer has said that it'll cost me a half hour of shop time to program.

    Keeping my fingers crossed.

All the dealer needs to do is delete the stolen key fob, not reprogram the entire system. It is probably not something that the people that answer the phone are very familiar with. You should be able to get the new fob + old one deleted for $350. Call around.

I'm not sure where in California you live, but if you are near Riverside, call Pop-a-lock at (951) 992-1096. I'm not sure about everything you need done, but to reprogram a new FOB is $70 if you buy the FOB from them, and $90 if you bring your own key. They charge $350 for the FOB and admit that they ain't giving us any deal for the FOB. I'm thinking of buying one off the Internet for about $100 and giving it a shot, but they ain't guaranteeing that they can program it.

Just an update on some numbers. I called Pop-a-Lock today (951) 992-1096, in Riverside, CA. To buy their FOB is $160. Programming it is $120. And another $20 to cut the key. Looks like a total of $300.00.

When I tried this back in 2011 with them, I bought a used FOB off the internet, and they couldn't program it to my car. They charged me the $90 anyway, which I agreed to pay whether it worked or not. But back then, they were charging $350 for the FOB. This next time, I'll buy everything from them.

Phil (or anybody else in the Southern California area), you might want to see my post from Tuesday where I updated the numbers. Now, I'd probably buy everything from Pop-a-Lock at $300 each, installed. However, I think that price will drop a little as the years go by.

    Mike,

Are you telling me that I only need to buy that gizmo and a FOB and I can program it all myself?

I'm assuming that gizmo comes with whatever software I need, right?

I'm also assuming it has all of the instructions I need to program the car to recognize the new FOB.

    Are my assumptions right?

If so, I'm getting one now.

Yep; exactly. It includes the software. That's how I did mine. No issues.

I just ordered a FOB from ebay, $85 and comes with uncut key. I also ordered the mini-VCI cable and techstream software to program. <$30
Once I have key blank, I will price with local locksmiths on cutting.
