Wrong. They will use it because they know many detectors don't pick it up. POP is a worry and if you can't detect it you can get a nasty surprise. Took me awhile to figure out what happened when I got a ticket that way a year ago with nary a peep. Ironically, it was in a zone that I thought was marked 10 mph higher and I was hanging close to what I thought was the speed limit--I was trying to figure out why I was being pulled over. In the Bubba zone they don't worry about reporting what radar method they used to get your speed, so after some research I realized he had been using POP.

Sent my detector in for a hardware upgrade for POP detection, no more bullshit tickets, although the extra sensitivity means more falses (followed by the "never mind" tones.)

no POP can not be used in court. Some may use I/O(instant on), trigger burst..which gives an instant reading. POP is used in conjunction with either constant on or a burst, it does not read the speed accurately.

Bee III POP units states that a radar running in POP is unreliable and that no citations should be issued based on POP alone. Meaning that either the cop won't site your or you will win when you go to court or worst case the cop will commit purgery.

most newer decent detectors have POP alert. I leave mine off, because getting nailed with POP is rare, you are more likely to get struck by lighting. now it could be different where you live.

POP tends to give alot more K falses, so I turn it off.

if you go over to radardetector.net forums, the general consensus is, unless you know POP is being used HEAVILY in your area, to turn it off. it degrades performance on many models, except like the high end escort 9500's or Bel sti'

here is an article regarding the XTR 690/78PRO models. Same base electronics as 695 as well.

"When POP is OFF, sensitivity increases by about 2dB. This can translate to a noticeable
    difference in Ka range"

Wrong. They will use it, they just won't say that is what they are using and nobody has challenged it yet that I'm aware of. Speaking from experience here. Nary a blip and the detector was working fine on other radar, but it couldn't pick up POP because of older hardware.

I've never had any trouble picking up instant on with the V1. There was a time years ago when the detection range was uncomfortably short, but that was fixed, and it was detectable...just short. Doesn't help if noboby else is around, but I get instant on warnings plenty early when they do a quick burst on someone.

So you can run blind to POP if you like. I did so unwittingly for awhile, won't do so again.

The stuff in the radar detector forums about the V1 was three years old and based on tests by a competitor. My detectors are two years newer than that.

I went the separates route. I have had a Bel Separates unit in my 4Runner for years. Stealthy and sweet, it works great!!!There is a control head, separate RADAR Detector unit, and 2 LASER Detectors.

I figured the next gen version, the Bel 975 would be perfect for the Prius, and it is!!!

I put the Control Head in the center console, between the cup holders...

You can close the lids, and there is PERFECT clearance!!! It was ment to hide there!!!

and the Front Detectors are here...

the Black "Dot" above the "a" in "California" is LASER Detector, and if you look into the grill, above the letters "Cal" there is a small black reddish rectangle. That's the RADAR Head.

I do not have to see the Control Head Unit, just hear it. In fact the next day after the install, I found the "Chippie" pulling the "Old stake out the on ramp trick". He pulsed the cars in front of me, the reflected bounce triggered the unit, I know their tricks. As I passed I looked in the rear view in time to see him, and hear him pulse me! I was doing 65 by then. Yep it works!!!

    whatever POP is poop.

    most leo don't use it.

I'm not going to argue any further about it. We are both being boorish

Many LEO's don't use laser regularly either and laser detection is usually too late. But that doesn't mean you can just dismiss laser...or POP.

I would be willing to bet that most people travel through several other states in the course of a year and across enough different LEO jurisdictions that they have a good chance of coming across POP during the year.

Besides, if you can't detect POP you are still screwed. Realizing that folks are running with no POP detection, how would a smart officer use it? As a screening tool. He/she will read your speed in POP while you are oblivious, then switch to normal mode to do the ticket shot. This gives you zero chance of picking up a shot on another vehicle.
