Why are European fuel prices a whole lot cheaper at night?

Always a good way to find out what the 'man on the street' thinks.

Are you heading over in a professional capacity? Why Germany? Other Countries have renewable programs, some of which have been pulled back - such as our own in the UK. Is it Solar PV you're specialising in?

I know I've mentioned it before but I'm with the following UK renewable company Ecotricity - the green energy company, supplier and generator of eco electricity and gas who are small but growing quickly. It's run by an ex hippy (I'm sure he won't mind being called that) who decided to do something possitive about renewables at a time when the big providers wouldn't consider them. The boss is quite a character and is somewhat forthright in his manner. He also has a blog which is interesting http://zerocarbonista.com/ .

Have fun reading and enjoy your trip to Europe.

So I waltz past this fuel station in the second largest Danish city this morning. A little before 10AM the prices were high (it is Easter, after all), and right after 10AM they were ridiculous:

Both yesterday and today are expensive days, so the increase is small (for a 10AM adjustment).

The increase in the diesel price is $.48/gal.
The adjusted price for ron 95 gas is $9.17/gal.

I'm still waiting for it to hit $10/gal... perhaps this Summer?

You let the Russians in you're ****ed. Sell up, move out, go anywhere. They'll use the gangster tactics they use in Russia. I guarantee any stations nearby will be 'leant' on to increase their prices.

I can't believe the Dutch Government would allow this.

One of the pleasures of owning a Prius is you don't have to give a damn about gas prices. :)

There's enough giving a damn to go around with all those SUV owners.:)

In NJ gas stations can change their prices only once in a 24 hour period. On the toll roads they can only change once a week. It's either Friday or Saturday. I'm not sure because I don't use those roads.

A casual reading of this thread infers that the daily change is scheduled for 10:00 everywhere in some places.

So, in an environment of rapidly rising prices Thursday's fixed price on the Garden State Parkway is well below market & people actually get on just to buy gas.

When prices fall, Thursday's price is very high & only the desperate buy gas.

A bit 'tongue in cheek' but also a bit serious. I personally will never trust Russian Companies ever since they turned the gas pipeline off to Western Europe and the UK twice in four years a couple years ago. If a company as large as Gazprom are happy to do that on a whim, then I'll buy my energy from somebody else thanks. The UK also immediately built a massive gas pipeline to Norway afterwards as at least we can trust them to provide the product that's been paid for.

So who's to say the Russian fuel suppliers in Holland aren't going to do the same again once they have a monopoly on petrol stations? They've already done it with natural gas supplys!

The comments made were not about your average Russian, more the corrupt larger businesses - mainly energy companies.

Maybe the UK was affected more as we're at the end of the pipeline but it was a big wakeup call to us. Nothing to do with the Cold War, but more to do with trust.

In January 2009, this disagreement resulted in supply disruptions in many European nations, with eighteen European countries reporting major drops in or complete cut-offs of their gas supplies transported through Ukraine from Russia
