The second mode is "ign on" mode. Some test procedures need it. You can use the power windows in this mode as well. Kind of a "roll the windows up without the danger of the car moving" mode. ;)

This is the equivalent of an old key start on a conventional car when you turn it to the second position but don't crank the starter. The a/c fan will blow but it won't chill because the ICE isn't running and turning the a/c compressor. Back to hybrids, when it's in "ign on" and not in "ready" mode, the HV battery relays aren't connected so it can't power the electric a/c compressor nor drive. Same concept.

so, if it won't run a/c in acc or ig on, what happened to o/p's 12v battery, fan drew it down?

The push button start system, how many pushes, with/without brake pedal, is a new level of confusion. Even the language describing it is confusing.

Were there ever conventional-keyed Prius? Gen 1? Level 1 of Gen 2?

gen1, but i still don't think you crank the engine with the key. and i think the low package c also.

funny, i've never used acc or ig on, so it's all new to me after 12 years.(n)

I use "ign on" to roll up the windows when I forget to before shutting down. Can't use "EV" most of the time because we are in the "Great White North", where it's just too cold most of the time. Oh, and I'm too slow to hit the "EV" button and the engine starts anyway. ;)

Even if the fan and other switchable gadgets are off, there's heavy drain on the 12V battery in the IG ON mode. That won't take long to kill the battery.

This is the one and only feature about the Prius I don't like. I miss being able to chill in my car for awhile without draining the battery so easily.
Is there a replacement battery that is a bit stronger in the off time?

Yellow top Optima is a deep discharge battery, but you are not going to run an AC compressor off that.

A 'bit' stronger isn't enough. For this issue, something in a substantially larger case is needed.

I would just be resigned to different behaviour with the battery: never use it without the car in ready.

Not too concerned about running the AC, just want to listen to the radio.
