In my Prius shopping, I'm noticing fairly consistently that the Plug-In Priuses (3rd Gen) sell for on average about $500 less than the base trim 2 or 3 Priuses. Anyone have a good reason why?

they were heavily discounted (up to $8,500.) not long after coming on sale in some places, so the residual is poor. it's a great deal for those in the used market.

no spare tyre. no storage beneath the rear deck. i keep a donut on the deck when traveling, but it has a goop and pump kit for flats, and some people carry a tire plug kit.

it also has some upgrades over similar lift back package like 3 door sks, heated seats and mirror. depends on whether you're looking at base or advanced.

It's personal, but I don't like the appearance with the strip of tacky looking metal trim across the back of the hatch.

It's not even metal. It's just gray. The door handles as well are gray. Which just looks weird. What grates me as well is the front underbody... spoiler? The black part is piano black on a regular Prius. The PiP is textured black.

The advantages of the PiP even if you never plug in is 1 mpg higher and heated seats.

I have heated seats in my IV :). I haven't remembered to use them though - my old Subie doesn't have them - so thanks for reminding me.

the only time i use the heated seats is when i go for a night time drive in the winter with no clothes on.
