Why won't the iPad charge when plugged into the USB port in the center console ?
My iPhone charges and auto plays but the iPad will only auto play.

Correct, my Nook Color charger is 1.2 amps at 5v DC whereas my smartphone charger is only 800 miliamps output.

The power requirements for an iPad is probably even higher than 1.2 amps.

You might need to get a suitable adapter that plugs into the power outlet. Though finding a USB adapter that plugs into the power outlet and puts out that kind of current might be harder.

I've been using this very small InCase adapter in the center console with my iPad for many trips. Streaming over Bluetooth while charging from this adapter.

Your iPad might charge when it is turned off but not when it is in use. That is what happens if you plug an iPad into an iPhone charge adapter (5W) instead of into the iPad-specific adapter (10W).

Even though the iPad does not light up the 'charging' light, my experience is that a dribble of energy makes it into the iPad battery.
