Would an aftermarket subwoofer drain the battery faster?

    Just wondering... I'm guessing an aftermarket sub and amplifier would probably drain the battery faster and I'd get less than 12 miles for my charge?

    Certainly it will drain your 12 VDC Aux battery faster but assuming you will be using it (cranking it up) while the vehicle is in ready on mode, the HSD converter will cover for the demand.
    I have installed similar device in my other Prius for the last 6 years and never had an issue of draining the battery nor having a noticeable EV range diminishing.

    If ur in acc mode, yes.

    If ur in ready mode just standing still, yes. U will notice the ICE cycle more to keep the traction battery level up.

    I wouldn't be concerned when driving.

    I have a 700 watt RMS system. It doesn't seem to affect it that much, but I didn't get the car to break mpg records so I might not notice anyways.

    Note we're talking about the pip here. The ice won't be starting if you have sufficient charge in the traction battery to recharge the 12 V.

    PIP or not, If u are in ready mode & not driving, the traction battery level will drop if ur playing the radio. When it gets too low the ICE will turn on.

    If your battery is fully charged, you'll need to play that radio for hours on end before the traction battery charge level drops. Lol.

    agreed 2700 watts can go a long way to run the radio:cool:

    OK so the consensus here is that if I get a powered subwoofer in my car, it is unlikely that there will be a substantial hit to the MPG for a Prius Plug In?

    I really doubt it. Keep in mind that 1 hp = ~746 watts. A sub isn't going to have a continuous draw anywhere that high.

    That said, you sure you want to go this route? Anything aftermarket that looks like it's of value invites thieves, esp. if it's visible. I've had cars broken into 2x and my insurance did no good in both cases: no comprehensive the 1st time, it was an old car; 2nd time: deductible too high and I had no coverage for the stolen items. :(

    Items stolen: car stereo, CD wallet of CDs (most were store bought/retail), fanny pack, cell phone, Jawbone headset, PDA, iPod Shuffle. I had to also pay to get a door lock cylinder fixed and buy an interior bezel. In the 2nd case, I had to pay to replace a broken window.

    Yeah, you're prob right. I'm just weighing options at this point.

    Yeah, like I said before, if there were no such thing as car stereo theft, I'd have definitely spent $ to upgrade the crap stereo in my former 350Z. The JBL "premium" stereo in my Prius is more decent but not as nearly as good stereos I've heard in luxury cars.

    Shame on you leaving ALL that bite; opportunist thieves love that kind of stupidity.

    I have my Infinity sub-woofer installed straight-up behind the drivers seat, in the foot well, for the past 10 years, exposed to the bare naked eye and never found a malicious action; and it is NOT anchor to the floor.
    Yeah, my other standard Prius is a comfortable 3 seater and proud of it.

    Every little thing adds up. Your gas mileage may take a small hit but EV range should be noticeable.

    Headlights = 110 Watts.
    Heated seats = 60(Low) - 100(High) Watts
    Wipers = probably 100 Watts

    Let me know if I'm interpreting this correctly. See my comments/questions below:

    If I add a subwoofer, if I have other things running, I'm going to take a hit in EV range. If I don't have everything running and just have subwoofers and maybe headlights then will I take a hit?
    If I am driving, why would MPG not take as much of a hit? Is the car being driven going to help offset the energy it takes to power the subwoofer?

    So basically absolutely no effect on EV driving range... Conflicts with others... But you have a real world use case... What type of subwoofer/amp do you have?

    Welp. Another real world case. No problems. Good to know.

    How does the traction battery work? Is that the same battery that is used for EV driving or is that separate? If it's separate, does the EV battery eventually charge the traction battery? Sorry if I misused any incorrect nomenclature here.

    Good to know.

    I use an Infinity Bass Link 1.with an external volume control
    It is a powered amplifier sub-woofer enclosure.
    Main DC power out of the Aux battery and line level taps from the speakers.

    It will depend on how much power the subs consume. Keep in mind you need the actual watt usage, not maximum.

    I am averaging about 260 Wh/mi. So if I have 260 Watt sub going for an hour, I will take 1 EV mile hit -- to put it into perspective.
