My parents gave me the gift of time. They're going to come for a visit one weekend and help me and my wife finish painting the house and rip up the remaining carpet. This is great since we started this project in May. It was totally unexpected and just what we needed.

This is an excellent way to take the commercialism out of Christmas. And there are infinite possible variations on the same theme.

My younger son gave me two books by Barack Obama - "Dreams from My Father" and "The Audacity of Hope" - he wants to borrow them when I'm through reading them. And, yes, he DOES have a political agenda.

More importantly, my son made arrangements for the two of us to join a group visiting a home for the developmentally disabled on Christmas morning, visiting with the residents and handing out small stuffed toys as presents and singing. We hadn't done something like that for 15 or 20 years, but we'll definitely do it again next Christmas.
