    (09-14) 23:54 PDT CANBERRA, Australia (AP) --

Australian passports will now have three gender options — male, female and indeterminate — under new guidelines to remove discrimination against transgender and intersex people, the government said Thursday.

Any country that complies with the International Civil Aviation Organization's specifications for machine-readable passports can choose to introduce a gender "X."

Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd said the new guidelines removed discrimination on the grounds of gender identity and sexual orientation.

"This amendment makes life easier and significantly reduces the administrative burden for sex and gender diverse people who want a passport that reflects their gender and physical appearance," Rudd said in a statement.

Attorney-General Robert McClelland said while the change would affect few Australians, it was important because it would allow them to travel free of discrimination.

As many as 4 percent of people are affected by an intersex condition.

Of course that categorization discriminates against those who demand "All of the above" be the third choice.

That's easy. The answer is the opposite of "Are you married?"

Good on ya, Australia. It's about time sexuality was officially recognised as a spectrum.

Personally... I believe they got it right down under...

There IS more than just two genders of humans.

Why make the people that aren't one or the other of the perfect X or Y chromosome, say they are something they are not.

Let's back the truck up here. The only justifiable reason for even having the information on the passport is for purposes of identification, similar to height, and eye color. Given that, we are talking about outward appearances here (i.e. not mindset). So really, in order to be useful* the information should be breast cup size, and presence or lack, of penis and vagina. Since I can't imagine any scenario, where forcing people to expose those regions for identification, given that it only reduces any uncertainty in that identification by the merest smigdeon, should be tolerated in a free society, we are left with no reason to require the information to be present on the passport at all. And we can get the governments out of the business of regulating sexuality.

*- from a security standpoint, information which can increase the confidence given to a false piece of information can be worse than total lack of that information.

How do we decide which line to send them through at airport security? Come to think of it, I would prefer to be frisked by a woman than some hairy guy.

If you think indicating 'gender X' is controversial, imagine the outcry over stating bra size. And for something completely outrageous, imagine charging according to the combined weight of passenger and luggage.

Have you been on an international flight lately? This is not a free society. As for exposing ourselves, TSA agents get to see 'Snakes on a Plane' all day, every day.
