Yet another ScanGuageII question on EV MPG

How long does it display that?

Mine doesn't. It's an older model SGII though. 320 MPG is usually the highest sustained value I see while traveling with the engine still spinning.

 

could it possibly be more efficient at 35 than 15?

 

Anyone have some xgauges to cause their SG2 to shut down? I may need to send mine in for an upgrade. A few custom xgauges are causing problems.

 

the only thing i can think of is motors have an rpm efficiency range, as mentioned in another thread about accelleration. it may be that it is inefficient at whatever rpm it is running at 15 mph. just a theory based on your readouts.

 

Because the faster the Prius is traveling without sipping gas the higher the Prius' iMPG will be.
Mathematically speaking it looks like this...

MPG = (miles/gallon)
MPH = (miles/hour)
GPH = (gallons/hour), 0.00 to 0.02 GPH means the ICE is turned off

MPG = MPH/GPH

1707 mpg = 35 mph/ .0205 GPH
745 mpg = 15 mph/ .0201 GPH

The Prius ICE and the electric motors can both be turned off as long as the Prius has enough momentum and the gravitational, wind, or frictional forces are not powerful enough to slow the Prius down. Having a smooth downhill road segment with a tail wind helps too.

Note that the SG2 xgauge iMPG does not measure the energy efficiency of electric motor ( sofar as I know the SG2 doesn't yet have an PiP xgauge miles/kwh but it is available on the PiP onboard computer IIRC). A miles/kwh tell you how efficient the M1 and M2 motors are running. A regular liftback only has a SoC . BTW =Wrt to a PiP getting 4 miles per kwh should be your base line FE standard for EV only mode.

Essentially momentum is moving the Prius forward - and every second the Prius is like this its average FE is climbing all the more higher. Newton's 1st law of motion[1] says that as long as your Prius is moving in a straight line - it will continue to do so as long as no other forces like friction stop it.

The first thing I noticed when I transferred my Scangauge ll from my old smashed up 2009 into my PiP was that the gauge reading for instant mpg didn't come close to the dash reading in the PiP. Thanks for the explanation Walter. Not that I can understand it.

 

Positive numbers mean you are using power, and negative numbers mean you are regenerating power. That note I believe is referring to the pre production model phv. I have been using that xgauge.

Its kind of cool, sometimes you get p'd that the ICE came on but then see -20 amps going to the battery so you dont mind as much after that.

 

They are pretty easy to input. I got mine recently. I changed the back up beep, and the gauges I use are usually battery amps, State of Charge, coolant temperature, and avg mpg.

 

I know this is off the OP's topic but I will try to respond. If your SGII is 4.05 rev or later, LinearLogic has an issue with it on Can bus systems such as Toyota uses. Mine does not shut down but will display wonky characters and I have to reset the unit to clear. It usually does this when modifying existing XGauges. To date LL does not have a fix for this.
