Congrats! Have you taken other steps for better mpg? Raised tire pressure? Grill blocking? EBH? ... especially helpful w/ the cooler temps looming on the horizon. Even here in sunny so cal, the Autum morning temps are now in the low 50's and I'll likely end the present tank only averaging 59.6ish after an entire summer in the 60 mpg's.

 

Draft beer, not trucks. Try quicker acceleration where instantaneous mpg is half the speed. You're doing good but now it's time to push the edge of the envelope by trying for 60. A ScanGauge would help.

 

There are many better ways of improving FE than drafting behind trucks. Give them a try.

Well, if you are going to be following a vehicle, follow a big one rather than a small one. Trucks are preferable because they go near the speed limit. There is nothing wrong with following at a safe distance.

If you can go 53 mph on the highway, you could probably get 60 mpg plus . All you need is a more accurate battery SOC indicator and a tachometer. Such as a Scan Gauge. There is no need to draft to achieve this, but pumping the tires up to 42/40 definately makes it easier.

 

He has hinted at making a trip east. Where are you located? (It might help to include that in your profile.)

Well, I live in Pittsburgh PA where the hills are long and it's a battle going up and then down the hills ..... but yesterday I finally achieved my first 510 miles on 10.55 gallons that I was actually able to pump in. Usually I get around 472 or 457 but to actually get 510 I was a happy camper. I drive 38 miles round trip every day and average about 51 which is a big deal knowing the terrain that I drive. Marcia
