30min before I was like I will ask here as I am total anti-tech guy regarding cars. Only "problem" with this solution, you have to bother somebody with car and cables to jump you in /if you do not have 2 cars at home/ and than you can recharge by driving for a while. But I was quite scary after reading some negative topics, dead batteries and so on, but nothing bad happend.

btw, Hi Bisco, how is your plug-in now? I have my first winter with prius and when I changed my tyres to winter ones + temperature around 0C my increased consumption is about 0.5-1l/100km ...not so bad

i lose about 25% of battery capacity, so i'm down from 16 miles of ev to 12. mpg's also drop about 20%. reformulated gas, bad weather and etc.

I thought the car was only rated for 11 EV miles?

rating is by a standardized epa test. ymmv. most of my driving is local, 30-40 mph. some get more, some get less. precipitation and a/c use also reduce distance.

that is still impressive, I would be satisfy if I have PIP. The local car service guys from my small village never saw hybrid, they come with their car, I told them, guys, just connect your car to my battery here and here /from video/ and they told me ok, now try turn engine on. I told them, thanks guys you can disconnect, car in on now. they answer me, no something goes wrong, your car is still off/does not hear engine/ :) so we had a fun a bit :) ..its nice to live on small village :)

Your battery was near-dead, but with a jumpstart and a bit of driving around everything is fine now?

I would get it checked with a digital load tester. I'd suspect it's Cranking Amps are compromised, that the battery is marginal at best, and should be replaced soon.

not really. no sign of anything. I drive 30min to recharge it. And since than I drive once per 2 days and everything is OK. Battery is 5 year old. It would be really bad if u need change batteries so soon or if they die after recharge.

For the 12V battery, 5 years old is at or near end of life in most U.S. climate zones.

And because the Prius 12V system charges very slowly, 30 minutes is much too short, it takes many hours. See Patrik Wong's post at #10 of this thread: Dead battery. Again. | PriusChat

And, it's not 30 minutes on a dedicated charger, it's 30 minutes "driving around".

I'd describe the Prius internal 12V inverter as a 'dedicated charger'. But a very slow one, meant to be good for full time use. The faster home or bench chargers are meant for temporary use, so can charge faster without cooking the battery.

thanks guys, I read all your posts. Nothing happend from this incident. It is freezing now in my country. Even car looks perfectly fine, I will better change the battery after winter, or let it check by toyota service guys. I have much less experience, and if u say, battery is near dead, i have no reason to not believe you. If anything will happend, i will report here to share experience...

Yeah, we're all counting on your battery dying. Don't let us down.... No no no: kidding, hope you make it through winter. :)

There is usually very little reason to change the battery just after winter. The warming weather will extend its life. It is just before and during winter that most replacements are needed.

But if the charge is simply low, an ordinary 12V battery charger should take care of it, at much lower cost than replacing it. An ordinary battery check by the Toyota service guys will not charge it, they will merely tell you if it needs replacement. While they could also charge it for you, that is a separate step from testing it, and you would have to ask (and maybe pay for) that step.

Finally below freezing here, this morning, and light snow (first of the year). But we are on the edge of that great temperature regulator: the Pacific Ocean. :)
