Shudder, cylinder 3 misfire, check engine light

    So I just added it up, just using MSRP, $550 for rod bearings, main bearings, rings, and one con rod. Or $965 if the crankshaft is toast.

    Think I need the updated pistons? Were they updated in the TSB or was it just the ring set?

    The piston and rings both got updated part numbers. I believe the part number should be cast into the piston. You could verify whether yours is the updated number or not.

    I bought mine in early 2014 so I bet I don’t have the updated. I’m guessing my dealer could run my vin and tell me

    I talked to the guy at Toyota. He shows the only TSB for me is a reprogramming one and not for the piston and rings so he thinks I have the updated pistons.
    I also talked to the engine rebuilders and they are back logged over 3 mths. I talked to my head shop guy and he says he can clean it and rehone it if needed.
    So I’m thinking my only option now is to attempt the rebuild myself or buy a new short block.

    I saw the TSB. For the Prius it list the change as JTDKN3DU#E1791355, mine is JTDKN3DU#E17503xx. So that would mean the change occurred after mine?

    Looks like it’s been cleaned up. Probably factory or aftermarket rings, bearings, gaskets, etc. Install your intake, fuel, ignition, valve cover, water pump, and exhaust and it’s ready to run.

    I almost did this route, but because of the unknown of quality control involved in his work, and since I found this after I bought the Gen 4 motor, I would go this way if I had a reason to next time though.

    I’m pulling the engine tomorrow night and will disassemble and inspect everything. My plan right now is to replace the bent connecting rod, rings, rear main seal, and possibly the bearings and pistons. The head shop will hone the cylinders for me.
    I was looking at parts to order and noticed the bearings have options for mark 1, mark 2, mark 3, and mark 4. This is parts 26 and 27 in the diagram. Is this based off of the reading using the plastigage?
    Also is there anything else I should replace while I’m in there? I don’t plan on replacing the oil pump but maybe I should

    If you are having misfires, there are two items that I would recommend doing before anything else, because they are low risk and low effort.

    1. Buy Techron fuel injector cleaner (or equivalent) and put it in your gas as directed. Do some driving. Now wait 24 hours before you start dismantling anything for repair to see if there is an improvement.

    2. Find and check the connection between your intake air filter box and the intake resonator. If you want to take them apart, check the seal and try and replace it, be my guest. But all you need to do, as a test, is wrap some 1.5 to 2 inch wide tape, tightly, all the way around the tube joint connecting the two plastic boxes together to seal the joint. Check to see if there is an improvement.

    The intake resonator on the Prius is not a muffler, and it is not superfluous piece of plastic.

    Unfortunately the ERG cooler on a Gen 3 probably needs to be replaced or cleaned every 200K miles or so. Not a fun job.

    Regardless, I fail to see how either of your recommendations will resolve an active misfire.
