Sorry if this is wrong forum, could not figure out where else to put this.
Here is the thing. Knowing that Techstream is needed for brake fluid flush and some other important things, I ordered a Chinese copy of software and cable on ebay. It came with version 8.00.034 on a disk with no instructions whatsoever.

When I asked for instruction the seller said:
"In software, there will be a video installation, you only need to install the video installation drama can successfully complete the installation."

Later the seller send a bunch of files in email, including "installation video.exe" file.

    He said this:
"we have been sent to you the new software, the software which has installed video when downloading software, please shut off anti-virus software,
Avoid software with your antivirus software is not compatible with the download fails."

I'm afraid to touch this software. Sounds like a great way to infect your PC. I may need to clone my XP laptop on a spare hard drive and only install on that.

Any words of wisdom on the safety of this pirated software?

Most likely a virus, there is no reason a video should have a exe extension. Virtual Machines are the best way to run files that might contain a virus.

I've bought one. It works well.... Scan for viruses first if you're worried...

You want to install the device driver first. I then subscribed to TIS and downloaded the latest version....

OK, this is what I did. I was able to download cracked v8.00.0034. Followed the instruction with substituting the MainManu. It works, but very buggy and crashed a few times, fatal errors when trying to get to some data lists, and the PC froze when I exited the application. It changed a few options I wanted to change though.

I even downloaded v8.10.0021, as it supposedly has a few bugs fixed, including stability and fatal errors. But, I can't unzip the techstream_setup part as the file is corrupted. I downloaded a few times from 2 different sources (not many available for download in USA).

Any idea how to improve things? Would different MVCI drivers help?

What do you mean? I have TIS grayed out as well as the Check for update function.

If you get the higher level, I think for $55, you get to download the latest. Last year when I did that it recognized the MVCI and connected to the car.

Sorry, I reread your original post and should comment.

I did not use the techstream that whoever I bought it from sent me. I used the driver only.

That being said, you can scan the software for viruses like I mentioned before.

Techstream that comes with a subscription to Toyota TIS checks for a connection to Toyota servers and a valid subscription. While I did get it to work sometimes when my subscription expired, I think this is basically accidental.

Antivirus software seems to interact badly with Techstream and the simultaneous connection to the car and Toyota servers. I would disable the software and it would work MUCH better. This is probably why they advise this...

I do not think they are trying to intentionally harm you. You just payed them money for a product. I do think they had to do some kind of hacking to get the software to work offline. I recommend getting the subscription and downloading the software from Toyota TIS, and doing what you need to do with that.

The MVCI has limitations. I was able to activate the RS3200 alarm, but failed to activate the Remote start. It mimics the issues that Techstream Lite has.

Thanks, but I figured out how to do it already. Last night I was able to download the newest version 8.10.0021 and make it to work with hacked MainMenu. It was hard to find though. You are right, I haven't detected any malware yet.

The only problem is the hardware I was sent has the lesser firmware 1.4.1 and has problems communication with gen3 prius with fatal errors. Works fine on the other toyota cars I have. Bob previously described the issue here: MiniVIC . . . may have a problem | PriusChat but I didn't see it before ordering the interface.

Didn't really have an issue with that unless I left my virus/malware scanner active, but then again that was for the official copy downloaded from Toyota TIS directly with a valid subscription.

I tried the hacked TIS again with and without AV and there is no difference in function.

I'm still getting this on engine data list:
    Techstream error 1-4-6 too.JPG

What, is there a hidden alarm option in Prius? I didn't see myself. Also, this doesn't list it either: Gen III Prius - Customizable Parameters

I installed the Toyota remote start and alarm, purchased from an eBay seller who was also willing to provide a copy of TIS instructions. I found the alarm for your vehicle doing a search for it here: VIP Security System for 2010 & 2011 Toyota Prius. I have no experience with juicedhybrid...

They both require Techstream activation. It was successful with the alarm, but not the remote start. If you buy a Toyota remote start or alarm, you can ask for the TIS installation instructions. Some will be willing to give a copy. The instructions are wonderfully detailed, including how to activate it.

As long as you successfully installed the driver, I would still recommend purchasing the TIS subscription. I really can't tell if it is some kind of conflict with the software being hacked, no connection to TIS server, a problem with the MVCI itself, or a combination of. It would be easy to rule out the software if you subscribed and downloaded a copy. Then you could also rule out not being connected to TIS server as well because you have an active subscription. (I didn't really do much besides activate the alarm and attempt to activate the remote start, but my hunch is that it is not the MVCI. Most are a standard pass through connection type which is highly reliable to my understanding.)

There is a known bugs list here:

    Techstream Known Bugs

I'm afraid I do not have the time to figure out if the issue you are having is related to one of these, but it may be....
