To darn quiet along the faults this past week or so...

Pressure continues to build if there aren't little releases nearly continuously, and that leads to a big pop if there isn't those little releases.

Just saying, there probably - maybe here in the next couple of weeks, there will be a very large shaker...

I didn't get the last gasing data from the Geysers yet, but since the moderate quake there mid May, some levels were elevated at 300% the last I read... I think when those peaks finally dump and reduce to less than 50% of the average levels, there will be another significant event.

I'm still hoping that the Juan deFuca doesn't break... but it is due.
And when that happens, our little piece of property with beach access will be washed away.

Specifically regarding Juan de Fuca, is your feeling significantly different than six months ago?: In the coming weeks... Jaun DeFuca...
Or last year?: May 5th... the next super-moon, could bring in a super quake...
Or the year before?: I believe in the next <90 days, Mount Fuji will blow...

You're taking me seriously, Huh Bra...

You gots ta know... I'm using fuzzy logic... trying to not be called into court for not informing folks that they are in the possible path of danger... so I can avoid going to prison like the Italians did... well... admittedly, Stateside, there is little fear of that, but hey Bra, after several tequilas, I start to spout.

Oh... and I ain't a paid scientist in this field... but I have spent some time in a Holiday Inn Express... and have a number of years of schooling and fieldwork in geology and engineering before I decided to earn a living doing something for a little more fun... I do keep my nose in this because I find it fascinating, but in all seriousness, use copious amounts of salt if you are planning anything more than a light read with most anything I say in a public forum.

The Fuji thing was due to the big shaker that leveled a lot of Japanese coastline... historically, when it happened before, often enough anyways from the records in Japan and in the geological evidence, that I though it was worth a mention... the Juan deFuca is my little pet peeve Bra... I have property in Oregon that will be devastated, as the area has been before if you have ever visited the dead forests that were inundated from the last time that happened along the coastline... so when I say something about when the actual big break happens, it's because I know that it will come to pass, I just can't define exactly when, because I'm not Kreskin, or any real prophet of doom... what I have noted is there is a slowing of mid-sized events on that fault structure that lends one to conclude that stress is continuing to build for a large event (because smaller shakers aren't happening fast enough to negate the actual creep of the plates along that small neck of the woods) and that there are events occurring along the pacific plate and the coastline area of Cascadia that are notable.

Lucky for me, when the one smack that hit the Japanese coastline, I got my boat out of the harbor in Brookings... others I know in that harbor didn't... since then I have sold that floater, but kept the residence with beach access.

If you are taking anything that I say as law... or holding any real stake in what I espouse as an upcoming and possible tragic event... I hope you find I am full of hot air, and that these thing never happen in our lifetime. [IMG]

The real question is which is more problematic, Hurricane Alley in the East Coast (Sandy did a number on New Jersey and NYC ) (Florida more than we can mention) (Katrina in New Orleans) or Earthquakes and Fires on the West Coast? Mother Nature humbles.

We had a tornado or two last year... category 0... tore up an awning and some fruit trees... scared some folks enough that they wanted to move...

A former Coworker lost his home in the Cedar Fire in San Diego. He had insurance and they rebuilt the home. However he was displaced in a hotel for a month than a rental home for 2 years before his new home was rebuilt. His kids took it hard he said for awhile.

    Earthquakes

Still nothing above a 2 out here... that's abnormal... something big is going to happen... I'm insured out the yang, so it would't ruin me - unless the hand of god smacked the planet of course... but it IS NOT NORMAL for there to be so little activity.

I think it is very wise that you are insured. You never know.

You should check earthquake stats for your area. I remember reading a CCR report on earthquake for my old home I purchased in 1994 and sold in 2000. The CCR had done a soil analysis. It seemed that the Elsinore Fault and all it's tributaries were very near my home. On that property I did get a earthquake policy. The mortgage holder did not require it as some places do require flood insurance, but it made sense since I had equity in the property and could get wiped out in a heart beat. The funny thing is I replaced the carpet in a downstairs home office with an upgraded carpet. When the installer ripped the old carpet and pad out you can see many hairline cracks in the foundation. The soil is sand based and shifted from the numerous tremors. The damage was slow from the tremors. I'm sure insurance had a team of legal eagles to fight that opinion.

The home I purchased in 2000 and live in now is near the beach. I looked at the report and no faults in proximity. Very lucky. I also replaced the carpet on the whole downstairs this year and perfect foundation after 13 years.

I lived just north of Santa Cruz before I relocated to Sactown... our house shook bad and half came down while I was sitting on the sofa watching the Series = the reason for my relocating here - away from most of the major faultlines... it was easy selling the place after the cleanup.

That little bit of trauma was one of my motivating factors for being more of a student in tectonics and earth-movement...

There's been some activity now... a Cali without some shaking somewhere isn't going to stay a peaceful place... I'd much rather see/have the comfort of knowing the ground is crawling at my feet a little at a time, rather than waiting for a large event to relieve the pressure/tension - and all the aftershocks that lasts for what the folks in Japan will tell you feels like an eternity...
