No! The dealer techs open it. I come in and verify it and make a report
with digital images. Most of them are on the 1.8L engines like your Corolla.
Very common with extended oil service intervals.

Now it worries me that engine carbonizing oil rings follows only you. Are you SURE you are the only source of this effect? You seem to be claiming that you have NO data that s not YOUR work.

I don't know anyone of these boards that had oil related engine failure. And im sure not everyone changes their sythetic every 3k :)
In the old days engines had break in period, and changing oil/ filter after 1k would prevent lots of metal circulating with the oil and causing wear. With today's manufacturering tolerances and multi weight oils .. Sticking to the mfr recommendation is fine .. They are not going to risk warranty claims ...

Well, I don't know of anyone that said anything about engine failure except for that one confused poster.

How extended is extended ? Lexus/Toyota used to spec 7500 mile oil changes but had to change back to 5k due to engine sludging problems on the 3.0v6 due to narrow oil passages ( I think) that clogged even at 7.5k under some usage conditions. Those conditions were typically lots of cold starts / short trips on Dino oil and leaving the oil in there for a long time.

Talking to the Mobil 1 rep at Laguna seca - 10k on their " synthetic" is not even trying .. But again depends on usage ...

Yep! Also think of the byproducts that the oil captures. Acid's eat at seals and gaskets that
can lead to oil leaks. I follow my own schedules. Max mileage is 7.5K with a 6 month life.
More likely it will work out to a 5K mileage or 6 month schedule with my driving range.

Changing my oil twice a year isn't excessive, IMO. It's a proper maintenance schedule that
assures me, I won't have oil related problems in the long run. YMMV!

I still chuckle at folks dumping perfectly good oil out of new cars. Gotta get all that "manufacturing material" out of there, lol. I keep my cars a long time, follow the manufacturer's recommendations, and have never had an oil burner.

My Prius is has 93k miles on it and uses no oil. I would be VERY surprised at any prius motor using synthetic 0w-20 having carbonized piston rings while following the maintenance schedule.

LOL, only one of those is a Gen III and it had 200k miles! The others are Gen II and all had the oil light come on which tells me they weren't maintained properly. Try again.

*edit* and the Gen III guy says he "switched" to high mileage synthetic. Who knows what he was running before, whether he was the original owner, etc.

First, the 1.8L affected is the pre 2003 1ZZ-FE engine. The post-2003 1ZZ-FE and the newer corolla/prius engine 2ZR-FE is not affected.

Second, it's not extended intervals. My corolla was serviced (by dealer) every 4000-5000 miles and still developed oil consumption at 70000 mile mark. It's a defective design with too hot pistons and too few oil holes in them. New pistons fitted later in 2003 (in USA, and as late as 2005 in Europe) completely fixed it.

    How do I know? I have 2003 Corolla made in 2002 :-(
