Wow....lots of posts added to this thread and I never got that e-mail notification from the forum automation.

Anyway, to get back to the original point of this thread (HVAC system overriding manual selection to have hot air come out of vents on dash), I was driving my relative's NON-plug-in Gen 3 Prius. It was down to 50F this evening, so after the engine warmed up a bit, I put the fan speed on high, selected 80F as a temperature, and directed all the hot air to go to the dash vents. Manually directing the air to come out of the dash vents also kicks the climate control out of AUTO.

Guess what his Prius does? After a few minutes, the HVAC system goes back to AUTO on its own, and directs the hot air to the floor vents. I tried redirecting the air manually a few times, and sure enough, after a few minutes it overrides my directions and goes back to AUTO and the floor vents. Seems like this may be a "quirk" for all Gen 3s?

Also, his seat warmers get pretty warm almost immediately (~60 seconds) while my PiPs seem to take a few minutes to get warm.

Admittedly it doesn't get anywhere near as consistently cold here but I have never had mine kick back into auto or direct to the floor vents when heating. Also I would never heat the car to such a hig temperature, 71 F at the most.

once you use auto, it seems you have to turn the fan off to clear auto from memory. then you can turn the fan back on and use it manually. pretty sure the gen II was the same way. as far as seat warmers, mine heat up in 30 to 60 seconds.

Seat warmers are fast in mine and have never had a problem with the HVAC having a mind of it's own (except when I want it to in auto).

I guess my PiP is still too new - where would I find the engine temp readout? Also, please explain what you all are doing when you block the lower grille, what material and how fixed in place. Thanks.

For engine temp, you need a Scan Gauge II or an OBDII reader and an app for a phone/tablet to read the output.

Grill blocking is covered extensively in the forum.

i use 1/2" foam copper pipe insulation. $2. for four 3' pieces at hd or lowes. cut to length, open precut lengthwise slit and hold upto the grille. mark the spots where the grille has vertical stabilizers and slice about halfway thru the foam in those spots so it will slip in deeply enough to be snug. the trouble spot for me is the front license plate holder. i just stuff a short piece on either side.

I still have a pack of the copper pipe insulation in the garage for the TDIs. If it ever gets really cold around here for a while, I'll have to break them out.

My suggestion to search regarding the grill blocking was because there's a number of methods and parts utilized by various members of the forum so you can pick what suits you. Sorry if it seemed terse or lacking helpfulness.

And your welcome for the info regarding the Scan Gauge II and/or OBDII reader.....Jeez

The climate control system in the PiP does this kind of bizarre thing constantly. You've only stumbled on one case. Wait until it starts switching your vents from recirculate to outside air every time you press the AUTO button, or better yet, doing the same thing when pressing the OFF button. My favorite annoyance is when you press the filter button and after it runs for its programmed period of time it helpfully switches your vents to outside air so you can recharge your interior with all the stuff you just filtered out.

Sounds like you guys need the system checked out. There are plenty of examples on here, including mine, where the AUTO acts exactly like it should.

I assume the "filter" button is in the Advanced only...?

It's quite effective. I use it to stop dust getting in when cars pass on dirt roads and I use it when travelling long freeway tunnels. As well as filtering it completely stops outside air from entering. The three minutes is usually enough. A few time while travelling the wife has reacted to outside allergens and filtering has helped clear those. I agree about the noise which is why I don't use Auto.
