Yes. There is a fault somewhere in the ABS braking system.
In a panic situation or with poor traction, the brakes may not work as you expect......or need.
Best to get a shop to check it out.

The battery is an outside possibility but that usually causes various lights to come on that are not related to each other.

Pulled the codes. Only one...P1578 yaw rate sensor. A quick "Google" didn't yield much.

The 12v battery is only 2 years old, so it had better not be that.

    From what I've discovered, yes.

The repair manual I have suggests the brake booster with master cylinder or the power management control ECU as possible culprits with that code. (It also doesn't associate that code with the Yaw Rate Sensor, though some of the Yaw Rate Sensor codes do mention the brake booster with master cylinder.)

Honestly, I'd probably prefer a bad 12V battery over one of those, if I were in your shoes... ;)

Rotation of the car about a vertical axis (as opposed to pitch about a left-to-right axis, or roll about a longitudinal axis).

Probably so. The stability system needs to know when the car is rotating in a way inconsistent with its speed and steering angle, since that would imply skidding.

Sorry about that. Yes, I did. The "code reader" at O'reilly said that it was the Yaw sensor. I decided to take it to a dealer to be 100% sure. They stated that it was the drivers side, rear hub and wanted $700 to fix it. I ordered a genuine Toyota part from Advanced Auto part (direct ship) for $220. It was VERY DIFFICULT beating the old one out, but we finally got it.

    All's well (for this concern)

    Thanks

Found my problem as well. LF wheel speed sensor harness was severed.

    Had codes P1578 and C1465

I just experienced this yesterday after getting an oil change. I don't have an OBD scanner... anything I can do in the meantime to narrow things down before I take it into the dealer? I have read a ton on this board about thigs to do, but I don't have the MFD, so I'm not able to do the 12V test. I've checked the inverter coolant pump and it seems to be running fine.

unnamed.jpg I have 44K miles on the car... any advice would help. Thanks!

I haven't hit anything. I did take it back to the place that changed my oil, and they brought up codes C1203 ECM Malfunction and C1345 Linear Solenoid Unlearned. Checked out this page: ABS Brake Problem: Error Codes C1203 and C1345 | PriusChat. Looks like I'm headed to the dealership tomorrow.

But, on the way home I did notice something odd: the battery isn't charging anymore. I'll brake, but on the Hybrid System Indicator didplay, the battery only has 2 notches(it's usually only 1 notch from the top) and when I brake, the meter doesn't go into the "CHG" section. Is this battery related?

The linear solenoid (in the brake actuator) is used in coordinating the amount of hydraulic brake effort with the amount of regen. If the computer is in the state where it needs to learn the solenoid calibration, it might be deciding not to do regen at all until that's done.

But the battery should charge in other circumstances besides regen braking. Are you saying it never shows charging at all? If so, might be worth having the HV and battery ECUs queried for any codes that might explain that.

So the dealer said it's the 12V battery. They are replacing it for $250 walk out.. not too bad so I took it. They also wanted to charge an additional $240 for: RE CALIBRATE ZERO POINT SENSOR (CODES 1336ZERO POINT CALIBRATION SENSOR UNDONE) and RE CALIBRATE LINEAR SOLENOID VALVE(CODES C1345 LINEAR SOLENOID VALVE OFFSETUN-DONE). I called another dealership who didn't think I needed those done, and frankly that seemed a really high amount for recalibration. And I can always have it done again in the future. Do you guys think this is something I truly need?
