My 3Gen Prius is 117k and 8 years old, has been ticking on braking&steering since 40k and for 5 years. I decided to do nothing.
If it were about the CV, it would have collapsed by now. I'm pretty sure there is a slack in the connection to the hub that makes this sound.

I have an appointment for tomorrow at Toyota for this exact problem. My car is lowered on Tein springs and after reading through 13 pages of this thread for an hour, I'm wondering if I should even bother showing up. I'm at 90k miles and have a 100k mile MaxCare warranty from Carmax which has a $50 deductible when doing repairs outside of Carmax. I wouldn't mind paying the deductible for a brand new CV axle drive assembly shaft(s) thingy, but I'd hate to pay anything for them not to find or fix anything.

    What do you guys think?

I’m lowered on TRD springs. I currently have 125k miles. I still have the same ticking sound. The car is running fine. I wouldn’t bother.

I appreciate that a lot. Now dumb question, if I skip out on the Toyota appointment tmrw (it’s at 730am) will they charge me for the missed showing? They called me tonight at 6 to confirm and I said yes.

I wouldn’t think so. Things come up all the time. Give them a call in the am and just explain to them. Hope it all works out.

My car is at 148k (2010 Prius III). Bought it used at 142k past November. I realized this noise shortly after I purchased it. It is exactly what's described here numerous time: High frequency ticking at low speed.
I hear mine mostly when I make the right turn and braking. I didn't try whether it happens at "N" but I am 99% sure it will not.
I have been thinking about how to bring this up and find more info. When I saw this thread the other day, I knew it was it...

It never bothered me seriously. It is a noise that I hear when not listening to something and when windows down. This noise never gets worse in my case. It is always the same (at least for now). No idea how long it has been going. No warranty left on my car what so ever. I don't plan on taking any action. I personally do not believe it will pose any danger or gets worse in time. I read all 13 pages of this thread in 2 days and didn't find a single example where the owner had a serious issue not taking care of this problem.
Sure I would have tried something if my car were under warranty. But spending hundreds to quiet a noise temporarily (because many reported it came back later) doesn't seem logical to me.

I will keep driving mine and save on gas(y)

Well reviving this old thread, my 2010 with 113000 miles has developed this ticking noise. Time for a new axle......damn

$99 at Napa or $350 from Toyota online

2014 Prius here with the same exact "clicking" while braking and turning problem. Since most of the 3rd gens are out of warranty, did anyone replace their CV axles with aftermarket ones? Been reading that Cardones and Raxles have reliable parts for CV axles. Anyone replace it with those and did it go away? What part# and did these noise ever come back? Non sense replacing the axles if the noise comes back. The car is great except for this one irritating issue.

140k and counting, been hearing it since 30k (more or less). No measures taken... "If it works don't touch it."

eviving this thread. 2015 with 96K miles. Had been hearing this since 30K, only when braking on turns at slow speed, then i changed my suspension to Tein flex A and now i can hear it without turning the wheels. Contemplating if I should get the OEM axle since the oems fail on a certain point, also got bad experiences with aftermarket ones with the previous car so I really dont know what to do.

Jacked up the car and tried to look for the issue, is this normal for an axle?

    How is the Napa axle?

I've been hearing clicking while coasting slowly through turns nearly as long as I've had the car. It doesn't seem to be a big problem, considering the boots are ok, and the joints are quiet otherwise. The time to worry is when they start snapping loudly under power.

My Mazda made a similar sound coasting at low speed even when not turning. That may have started when the original shafts were replaced with rebuilts from NAPA.

I just noticed this ticking on my 2015 with 163k miles. Only happens when rolling to a stop, with brakes applied, and turning right.

After reading thru the posts, I'm thinking it's the axles. They have a tiny bit of normal play that increases over time. When you move the axles by hand you can hear the click There's probably something in the regen braking system vs. Issac Newton, and a right turn, that causes that movement repeatedly in quick succession.

It doesn't bother me at this point. I'm not going to take any action.

Ok, so this issue comes from 2gen also. Thank you for the input!
