it's hard to put myself in your car. these are not built for acceleration, but mpg's. you may want to drive another one at a dealer to see how it feels.

Oh I know it's not a race car. I am not expecting that. I am just curious how the prius should respond when accelerating from a dead stop when the ICE has turned off once stopped. Is there normally a slight delay from the time you let off the brake to accelerate and the time you actually start moving forward?

Does it shudder when you accelerate? Where did you buy the transxle?

Sounds like the one I replaced, and someone picked it up to scrap

No it does not shudder on acceleration...it really just seems that there is a hesitation between the time I let off the brake and when the ICE kicks on and I move forward. No hesitation/shudder while I am moving and accelerating. I bought it from a junk yard in VA

The ice does not kick on right away, there is a delay unless you put the pedal to the metal

actually, the prius has a built in creep feature, to simulate an automatic tranny. if you let off the brake, and it doesn't move forward on flat ground, before pressing the gas, something is wrong. i don't know how the creep feature works, but it should move on electric. if your battery reads okay, perhaps there is a transaxle problem. does she roll easily in neutral?

yes the car creeps forward when I let off of the brake, I am just talking about a slight hesitation/shudder from the time I push the gas pedal down to the time it feels like I am moving forward at an appropriate pace from a stand still.

if it's creeping, then the battery is powering the motors and giving you acceleration until the engine comes onto assist. if you accelerate slowly on flat ground with a completely warm engine, you should be able to get up to 30 mph without the engine coming on. it may not behave like when it was new, and the problem might be that it's a 9 year old vehicle, with mostly 9 year old parts, rather than one specific problem. or, it could be something simple like the throttle body and associated parts, or injectors. maybe you need to address the catalytic converter code?

I'm hoping the junk yard didn't sell you a part that was switched out from another car....because it failed. You should not have a shudder when you first accelerate.

I suspect what he's experiencing is normal.
Those of us who drive Prius cars get used to the gentle creep followed by the engine starting up. In any other car it would be considered a hesitation.

But he's not new to that car, it's something that's out of the norm from how it used to operate.

When you say "not starting" do you mean it won't go into ready-mode, or do you mean the engine won't run?

Yeah, I know it's always a crap shoot. I did purchase the lifetime warranty on it so if I do have a problem I can get another unit at no charge but I would have to go though the process of pulling it out and replacing it again.

That might be it. Like I said before this car is new to me. I bought it with a cracked transmission case. I drove it home and parked it. Then I replaced the transaxle. I drove the car for the first time yesterday since driving it home in July.

I'm am new to the car. This is only the second time I have ever driven it.

I am already past this, but it would not do either. When I was having the problem it would not go into ready mode and the engine would not start.

No new information, but I just wanted to update this thread. I figured out the hesitation/shuddering, it was the transaxle. While warranty service was being performed at the dealership I asked them to diagnose the problem, they said there were no dtc's stored so the problem must be internal to the transaxle. I swapped out the trans again a few weeks ago with another junkyard unit and now the car is functioning properly.
