Featured 2018 Camry hybrid to offer two different battery packs

    While plausible, my predictions will be 3 trim levels

    LE w/ NiMH
    SE and XLE with Li-Ion.

    All with temporary spare.

    LE will come in at 50/47/49 and the SE/XLE with 18" wheels (maybe 19" for SE?) will come in at 47/45/46.

    It is quite a huge jump over the 42/38/40 right now.

    Compared to 54/50/52 for the Two/Three/Four. That's not bad.

    Actually, I just remembered, they've said the paddle shifters are going to be on SE only. So, I'm going to go back and say no XSE (XSE being the upgrade of SE, so why wouldn't it have paddle shifters if it existed?)

    paddle shifter with no console shifter? i'd love it, but will believe it when i see it. up to now, toyota has been afraid to scare off mainstream customers.

    Paddle shifters in addition to the console shifter. For shifting between gears in sport mode.

    Yes, I'm aware that a power split device doesn't have multiple fixed gear ratios. (It's just a bigger version of the Gen 4's gearbox, I believe.) But, in sport mode, the Camry Hybrid will pretend to have six fixed gear ratios.

    "Both the V-6 and the I-4 are coupled to eight-speed automatics (replacing the previous six-speed boxes), and the Hybrid SE adds a paddle-shift six-speed simulation. We’re told to expect roughly 10 percent more power and 20 percent better efficiency."

    Yeah that was part of that Toyota Japan press release on the "Dynamic Force" engines and transmissions

    Toyota unveils new TNGA-based engines and transmissions and improved hybrid systems | PriusChat

    It mentions that the 2AR engine (that's the 2.5 litre 4-cylinder) can expect to get up to 20% improved fuel efficiency.

    Again, I think Toyota is targeting 50mpg. I suspect the 2017 EPA test methods might put them just shy of that number.

    Maybe 50 MPG City, they're gonna want that for bragging (and marketing) rights, no doubt. While the new Camry looks more aerodynamic, could any Sedan form match the 50mpg of the Prius on the hwy? Either way, 50mpg in the city would be phenomenal, especially for a mid-sized Sedan.

    sure !! Toss in a 10 kWh usable plugin traction pack in the Camry & you'd easily do MORE than 50 - & you eat the plugin Ford Fusion's lunch - to boot.

    I agree. My predictions back in Post #41 are:

    I'll like to make an edit - the SE probably won't come with 19". Apparently that's an XSE feature.

    yea agreed - but i wishToyota would just stop already - with the heeeuge scoop look & front end/oversize looking grill. That kind of attempt to 'stand-out' invariably backfires. Just like 1970s men's platform shoes ... a couple years later - the 'stand-out' fad dies, & the 'standout' look suddenly looks like a horribly bad joke.

    Atempts to stand out often forces customers to buy new products, so you don't end up looking like a tool - the sucker who can't grasp that they fell for the silly - over the top - flash in the pan styling. Personally, it's great when a manufacturer takes into account a design that will somewhat remain timeless - so it doesn't have an embarrassment factor down the road that screams, "yea - look at me & the blatently outdated style I bought into, years ago". Don't get me wrong, the marketing team knows it's audience. My better half says the color of our kitchen granite counters are 'out of style'. Granite counters, that'll outlast one's great great grandkids. You gotta love the ad man. Enjoy the big scoop front end while you can.

    Well let's see Ford makes larger heavier versions of every segment, ford is efficient like dodge. Closest they came was the escape hybrid.

    GM actually does OK but the only offering like VRS like is the 2017 Malibu hybrid.

    Honda has the ability to build very efficient drivetrains but is hung up on bigger or sport hybrids . Their next Accord phev will be the closest in the driving tank class. (50mpg city but not highway)

    Hyundai has an Ioniq but until they have time to spread out really can't match 50 mpg in a Camry size apparatus. Just sort of regular offerings
