Check Engine Light :(

    Well - only 100+ miles in and the check engine light is on. Seems kind of rough getting into the gas mode from EV mode. That's when the check engine light started flickering. It's now just on.

    FYI. I was messing around with my 2014 prius electrical side (after a week of receiving my new car in 2014) and I end up with engine light on. I think there are also a weird warning on the digital panel display. I basically power down and then power up a few times and the error disappear until now. I think it is just a new car glitch due to the break-in period. Hope that help..

    If you didn't touch anything in the car and get this warning, you should bring the car back for a quick check and for the CPU reset. It's under warrantee and That's what I will do.

    Well just an update.

    The car is still in the shop.

    P030027 - Random/Multiple Misfire Detected (Emission) Signal Rate of Change above Threshold
    P030085 - Random/Multiple CYlinder Misfire Detected (Over Temp) SIgnal ABove Allowable Range
    P030100 - Cylinder 1 Misfire Detected

    They still can't correct it.

    Toyota Corporate has been contacted.

    Hopefully i'm the only one with the dud. Well at least my rental is a prius prime.

    I should have gotten the advanced :cry:

    well toyota says this is rare. I'm coming from a bmw 330ci and for 10 years that car was solid. less than a week i'm out a new car

    I want to say that they already went through replacing the coils and spark plugs?

    the next tests they are doing today are as follows :

    1. Leak Down
    2. Compression Test

    The irony is six months in a BMW i3-REx, 11,000 miles and these repair actions led me to replacing the 2010. I was planning to hold it for a year but for the BMW i3-REx: (1) initial motor mount bolt campaign (7 days); (2) broken front glass (my bad, 2 days); (3) failed backup camera (2 visits, 2 days,) and; motor mount failure in evening traffic (10 days.)

    These forced me back in the 2010 Prius which I am replacing because: absence of dynamic cruise control; affordable Prius tires; no usable 2010 EV, and; doubts about the future Prime $4.5k tax credit. So I'm upgrading 2010 to the Prius Prime while I can.

    Substantial Defect
    A "substantial defect" is a problem covered by the warranty that impairs the car's use, value, or safety, such as faulty brakes or steering. minor defects such as loose radio knobs and door handles do not meet the legal definition of "substantial defect."

    I don't think mine is/was:
    • motor mount - the initial recall did not replace the actual mounts but just the bolt (or so I am told.) There have been other motor mount bolt failures so I call that one a latent design defect.
    • cracked windshield - the wiper came off in my hand and the arm snapped down. I call it operator error since that could happen with any car.
    • failed backup camera - a 2014 model, I suspect the replacement is much better at handling Alabama summer heat
    • bought two tires, other two replaced under warranty - I expect used cars to come with 'bad rubber'
    I'm not inclined to call it a lemon because things do fail early in the first model year of a new model car. I would have to see a unique to that particular car failure that repeated to call it a lemon. So far, one design flaw, one operator error, one weak camera, and two tires because they do wear out.

    My expectation is the initial warranty is there to handle the infantile problems. This car only had 6,440 miles when I bought it and just passed 17,400 miles. I've 'ridden her hard and put her up wet' to encourage any early problems to happen under warranty. Stuff broke and BMW fixed it. Having seen the latest repair, the new parts are much stronger.

    If we go 2017 without out any parts breaking and get a feel for the tire wear, I'll be happy. My expectation is to reach 50k miles sometime in July 2018 when the warranty ends. I'll then make my fuel tank mod to double the highway miles and drive it until the wheels fall off. Meanwhile, the 2017 Prius Prime can provide a reliable backup ride.

    Well guess the Prime Advance is not immune to the CEL. Just got one after I received my car back from the tint shop. Just great.

    How did that rental or loaner situation work? Going thru the same issue with the CEL but don't know what's the present in my late Xmas present from Toyota.

    Update: CEL gone. Lol. Figured the tint shop might of pissed off my Prime Advance. After parking it and turning it off for about 30 minutes. Returned to car and turned on and it's gone. Love our beta testing sessions. Makes the ownership experience unique.

    To Coast Cruiser. Who are you? LOL
