    I have a Gen 4 and haven't noticed anything like that.

    My bad.....should have said "Do we know if the cold start knocking/ hammering issue, somewhat common with the Gen.3, has been resolved with Gen.4?? ......

    So: has the oil level been dropping? You reported (in the other thread) that it was around mid-point between the marks on dipstick. Have you checked before, it was at the full mark at one time? How long have you had the car, how many miles on it?

    No oil level has been the same, not dropping or leaking at all. Just noticed it these past 2 days on first time cold starts in the morning.

    Mileage is around 2200 miles

    I have a 2010 Prius with 160K on it. It is my second Prius. The first has 220K on it. This morning I tried to start it in 5 degree weather. The dash lights went on as usual. The gas engine started rough for the first time ever. It sounded like it was running on 2 or 3 cylinders. I shut it down, waited a couple of minutes and started it again. It ran smoothly at idle, but would not accelerate beyond maybe 1000 RPM. I have tried it a couple of times since. Same thing.
    Has anyone encountered anything like this before?

    A few 3rd gen owners here have reported it. I've had it once, and it was after cold-starting the day before, then shutting down with a few seconds. That's suspected to be at least one cause.

    You can't rev the prius engine high in neutral, but it should go more than 1000 rpm.

    when you say 'the odd rattle for 1-2 seconds', i'm not sure this is the same as the cold start cacophony.
