I could repeat the word multi-coat to them until the heat death of the universe and it wouldn't change the fact that most people have low standards. For most, if it looks OK from a dozen feet away they're satisfied, so that's the quality of work we pretty much all get.

It's the same thing when I'm trying to get tires installed on my (quite expensive) Volk/RAYS rims - I can never bring it to Discount/Canadian Tire or Costco or any number of "normal people" places - they'll all use "good enough" equipment and scratch the hell out of my wheels. I have to spend tons of time to plan, investigate, and employ my network of local car enthusiasts just to not get a half-nice person job.

Paint match aside, they apparently didn't blend it in, just painted up to, and stopped abruptly, at the bumper seam. That's not the way to do it.

I am very much under the impression that you have the very mistaken conception that they painted that bumper on the car. It was not painted on the car - it was painted before installation. I don't know if you've ever had to have a bumper cover replaced without rear quarter damage, but the vast majority of shops where the OP and I live will paint it off the car.

I also feel like you haven't read my previous post about why this isn't necessarily a bad thing - doing the paint blend to the rear quarter is not only quite a bit more expensive (e.g. quite a bit more difficult for the body shop to justify to the insurance company that's actually paying them), but it might devalue the car in addition to the accident because what repairs were made to the car can go on the vehicle history report (and rear quarter panel work usually indicates severe damage and very expensive repairs, which may not result in the car ever being quite "right" again).

I wouldn't care if the bumper was one or off when painted. I would like a blended-in paint job. Whether that was managed within the bumper or due to practicality spilled over to adjacent panels, I wouldn't care.

First, I will admit I don't know how body shops and insurance claims work in Canada (and the "culture" around what's considered an acceptable repair). That said, you haven't had a bumper cover replaced, have you?

We've had enough of them repainted. Back in December, before:

    And after:

This shot is a little blown out toward the top. I could post a better shot tomorrow if you'd like. I would expect a paint job to be be near-seamless, not noticeable.

when mine was hit (bumper and rear quarter panel) they matched everything perfectly. I have titanium glow which is fairly color changing so if they didn't do it perfectly it would have been immediately apparent.

bring it back. demand that they do it right.

Had them repaint it again... still looks maroon to me, especially from a distance, but better than it was...

Plus they really screwed up the decal under the left gate...

    Guess it's going back again...

I had a similar crash with my 2 month old 2018 Prius Prime. My wife was entering a restaurant and was hit from behind. The impact pushed our car into a car leaving the restaurant. The driver of the car behind was cited by police. The estimated cost to fix the RF and RR is about $12,500. The rear hatch will cost about $3,700. The dealer won't order the remaining parts which are needed until the insurance company approves the "supplemental" parts list. We were wondering who would put the first scratch on the new car. I hope it is repaired like it was before the accident.

Those were the years of the 5 mile bumper, a excellent idea that faded out.

so it depends on the height of the other vehicles bumper. I never quite understood why the fed never mandated that all bumpers be the exact same height. that way they would all line up and you'd get the best protection available, not to mention they could optimize them for car-vs-pedestrian impacts. where's ralf nadar to write another book when you need him.

At least at one time, they did require passenger car bumpers to be in a certain range, for crash compatibility reasons.

But SUVs and pickup trucks are not legally passenger cars. And as low volume niche vehicles, it didn't make economic sense to force them to meet the same safety requirements, so they were exempted. Instead, they were given a weaker set of standards to meet.

Fast forward a few decades. Some major motor vehicle makers are now essentially exiting the passenger car market, focusing on just SUVs and pickup trucks.

Whenever I do a quick tally of what's rolling down our streets, the smaller sedan and hatchbacks are definitely in the minority.

Minivans and SUVs are "Light Trucks"... same category as light duty pickup trucks.
