Took my first long trip today: 59 miles with 65.8 mpg
    Returning home: 57 miles " 99 mpg
To was all in HV, somehow I pressed the HV/EV select in such a way that it selected HV for the entire TO portion of the trip. Anybody know what's going on? (26 miles left)
Returning home I selected the EV and the car blended both modes with 10 miles left.
Terrain was all in the Sacto Valley, pretty much flat.

Hard to believe how efficient this car is.

Had to go about 30 miles, with a net altitude change of over 400 feet up. Mostly 55, 60 and 65 highway. I didn't think I'd make it all Ev, but I thought I'd give it a try. This is when I got there:

    20170512_064808_resized.jpg
I used the extra 2 miles to get back to the main road on my way back, then went into Hv for the rest of the trip. Ended up like this:

    20170512_103925_resized.jpg

Over 30 miles of Ev range on an uphill trip? 92.9mpg on the way back? How the...???

    Amazing.

It seems Toyota played it extra safe and conservative with the prime's EPA ratings(y)
Lesson from the PiP EPA 6 miles AER learned.

The EPA's new required testing standards are what is more conservative. It is good to be able to meet & exceed advertised figures, though.

That looks great for MI temps. My NJ temps are finally getting me into the 33-34 range. Not like those lucky Cali guys. ;)

It is amazing, also, the HV/EV switch can be held down for 2-3 seconds and the charger will significantly charge the HV battery, then you can return to EV for a while. As circumstances allow. I just learned this the other day accidently. A member confirmed what I was doing.

That is efficient only in certain circumstances (ie, going down big declines). It will use more energy (ICE) to generate EV than you gain. HV (or EV Auto?) would be the better option IMO.;)

Well, I still got 65.8 mpg with 30.1 miles of charge still left. Unbeknownst to me I got free gasoline and a free charger.
    Next time I will know.

I'm at just over 4,500 miles and third tank . . . 75% full. The B trip meter, last fill-up, says over 1,000 miles at 199 MPG. I gotta fix that.

Yeah, this is such a wide ranging car. Some are not even using the ICE much and some of us can charge infrequently. Mpg's are ranging 60 mpg to 199.9 mpg. It's hard to compare apples to oranges to pineapples or mangoes etc.! (y)

I am not aware of EPA new required testing standards from 2011 (PiP) to 2016 (Prime), which substantially influence the results.
On the other hand, as @bhtooefr reported in another thread:
EPA stated in the fuel economy data file for the Prime that Toyota voluntarily reduced the CS highway mpg figure that they got from the results of the test (and increased corresponding CO2 emissions figure).
To me, this is playing extra safe and conservative by Toyota.(y)

There was some complaint when the 2016 Prius was released because Toyota used the new tests a year before it was mandated.
Officially, they try to minimize the changes. See About the Ratings
Here is a comparison example for 2015 Prius. They do not appear to have the PiP in this tool.
