Hyundai IONIQ - Prius competitor?
Hyundai introduces IONIQ: compact car with BEV, PHEV or HEV powertrains
World premiere in Korea in January.
Rumours:
Expect the Ioniq to use a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine mated to an electric motor and Hyundai’s compact lithium ion polymer battery back.
Will be interesting to see what comes out of this. For me it comes down to transmission - if it's robotised manual I'm not interested.GasperG Dec 8, 2015 Prius, Hybrid, EV and Alt-Fuel News Read More Views: 239,026 Likes: 5 Replies: 2,329 -

Honda Clarity Plug-in
Source: 2018 Honda Clarity: Honda's new plug-in gets 47 miles of pure electric range
Honda ... 2018 Clarity Plug-in Hybrid. It can go 47 miles on a single charge. When it arrives in dealerships later this year, the Clarity will boast an EPA fuel economy of 110 combined mpg-e, with a gas-only city rating of 44 and 40 highway with a combined 42 mpg. . . .
"We think the combination of a class-leading 47 miles of all-electric driving range rating and a large five-passenger package will give us an advantage in the plug-in hybrid game," said Ray Mikiciuk, assistant vice president of Honda Auto Sales at American Honda Motor Co.
The Clarity will withstand a road trip.... -

50MPG from Chevy Cruze Diesel
I'm buying this car. It's called the Whisperdiesel in Europe:
"The first nonhybrid car since the 80s to get an EPA highway rating of 50 mpg or more." The previous record-holder was 51 mpg for the 1987 Honda CRZ HF (which would fail to meet current emission standards).
"The Cruze with the six-speed manual will get higher fuel economy than the model with the nine-speed automatic..... to keep diesel chatter low, the fuel injectors shoot as many as 10 squirts of fuel per stroke."

Model 3 has 310 mile range
Source: Tesla’s Model 3 Arrives With a Surprise 310-Mile Range - Bloomberg
Three hundred ten.
That’s the electric range of a $44,000 version of Tesla’s Model 3, unveiled in its final form Friday night. It’s a jaw-dropping new benchmark for cheap range in an electric car, and it’s just one of several surprises Tesla had in store as it handed over the keys to the first 30 customers.
. . .
Well if no one else will post it.

What’s blanching, though, is the car’s ride and handling. If anybody was expecting a typical boring electric sedan here, nope. The ride is Alfa Giulia (maybe even Quadrifoglio)–firm, and...bwilson4web Jul 29, 2017 Prius, Hybrid, EV and Alt-Fuel News Read More Views: 50,035 Likes: 9 Replies: 776 -
2019 Prius restyling
The information is from a Japanese car magazine. Pictures are at the link below.
How will the Prius look with the new changes?
The front headlights return to a more traditional shape that contains a single Bi beam head lamp and a small triangular turn signal.
The garnish at both ends of the bumper was also renewed, changing to a portrait shape similar to the Prime. The brake lights curve under the split window and form a C shape. The entire tail light assembly is a little more than the height of the split window.

Ford Engineer Claims Tesla Has Big Issues: Shoddy Build, Unsafe Parts
Ford Engineer Claims Tesla Has Big Issues: Shoddy Build, Unsafe Parts
"TBH I love what Tesla has done for EVs. Simultaneously, their engineering is some of the worst shit I have ever seen in any industry. It's often horrifying. Their tech and engineering in battery and HV electronics and harnessing outpaces the industry by 5yrs easy, but their logistics and quality is so poor I'm astonished that the things have as few problems as they do.
I've torn down dozens of vehicles. When we opened our Model 3 when it first came out, it had loose screws dropped randomly in the chassis near sensitive components. The fit and finish of the alignment of panels is ridiculous. Their electronics frequently flaunt safety guidelines and do not meet UL regulations." -

Dr. Prius Packs Less Than A Year Away?
Here's pack #1 and #2 of the final pre-production test batch of Dr. Prius' aka: @jacktheripper's lithium packs for Prius.
It took 1/2 dozen years to get the right lithium chemistry and packet size to get to this point. And though the module cases were 3D printed, which took an exhausting amount of time per module, the weaknesses of 3D printing accuracy won't be an issue in the production version which will be a much more precise and quick to make injection molded plastic.
Above are the two initial test vehicles for these packs. On the left is a Prius modified for fastest lap times at the race track and it belongs to Rice Prius and on the right is my tired old 1/4 million mile Prius that's never needed any work other than basic engine and battery maintenance and is still all original parts in...PriusCamper Oct 28, 2020 Prius, Hybrid, EV and Alt-Fuel News Read More Views: 40,919 Likes: 10 Replies: 146 -

California APPROVES Aftermarket Catalytic Converters!
California was known not to legally sell aftermarket catalytic converters and anyone who’s cat was stolen had to pay for a brand new original catalytic converter from Toyota. Now the state of CA Air Resource Board has approved an aftermarket catalytic converter to be sold and installed on any Prius. This is great news to owners who don’t want to spend $2,000 at Toyota! the aftermarket cat. number has to match the state database and needs to have the Executive Number D-193-151 on it.

RAV4 Plug-in Coming In 2020 (Page 4 for deets)
It’s happening! Toyota is expanding it’s Plug-in options in a major way by making a RAV4 Plug-in PHEV available for sale in 2020. No word of any kind on range or pricing yet, but Toyota was clear that the RAV4 Plug-in will be the most powerful RAV4 in the lineup.
This is a very exciting announcement as Toyota has seemed hesitant on their public commitment to battery-powered vehicles in the recent past.
Here’s Toyota’s full press release on it:

The Story Behind the Birth of the Prius

The Story Behind the Birth of the Prius, Part 2 | TOYOTA Global Newsroom
It is not a stretch to say that for many people, the word "Prius" comes to mind when they hear the word "hybrid." The Prius has become so widely known that it is nearly synonymous with hybrid cars.
But what's the story behind the Prius? Just how did this revolution in car-making begin?
We spoke to Satoshi Ogiso, the only person to have worked on the Prius from the project planning stage all the way through to the current fourth generation. He told us about what led to the development of the very first Prius.

Conditions best for Eco, Normal and Power mode
I am new to hybrids, I have my Prius Prime Premium for 3 weeks now. It seems to me there are advantages of using each mode in different conditions but I read some saying they are always in Eco. For instance I live in a hilly area,if I'm doing 30 mph up a hill, Eco mode is struggling unless I happen to be in EV. Even in Eco EV the coach is telling me to crawl up the hill. Can someone explain this?
